I want to buy a laptop for my daughter. Can she just take it to school and start using the internet (her school has wireless internet), or do we need to purchase a cord or something that can let her use the internet?

Since you said that her school has wireless internet be sure to buy a laptop which has a wireless adapter built into it. That will enable her to tap into the wireless network. There is no need for a cord unless she is in a place where there is no wireless access. The cord costs like $5 so it would be nicce to have it as a backup.

It'll likely come with a cord (phone cord) so's she can dial in when she's not near a wireless connection - even though the school "has" wireless internet, reception or connectivity may not be available in each and every location out and about the campus. Make sure the laptop has the right type of wireless cards. Make sure you've got a dialup arrangement with an ISP in case she's ever in a place where she needs to use the computer but the wireless connection isn't available. Last, make sure the computer is set up to "connect to the internet by dialup only when a wireless connection isn't available"

Well first off, you have to make sure that your laptop is equipped with a WIFI card. This is so you can retrieve a wireless signal. Mostly all new laptops come stock with some sort of wireless network card. its built into the laptop so you wont see it. But once you have a wireless network card. (If your laptop doesn't have one go to best buy or some electronic store and look for a USB wireless network card.) Once you have that, also buy a wireless router. This is wat you hook up to your modem at home. If you have cable internet at home. You hook the modem up to your router and the router comes equipped with an antenna which feeds a signal of wireless internet up to about 300 ft. Straight to the point, you need a wifi card and a wireless router. And of course you need a cable internet connection. Hope this helps!
