How do you resist the urge to one-up other smartasses when the situation is inappropriate and they are exercising no control whatsoever?

My teacher is of the sarcastic, witty genre and provides a lot of material to work with. I actually care about the class because I want to work in the same field, but I'm making it impossible to get a good reference from the guy because he actually invites smartass replies. And I'm really good at being a smartass.

I had a prof. like that in college. He was actually (in his own smartass way) encouraging people to think creatively. At times his remarks would make people mad and they would work harder for him. Maybe this teacher is trying to get you to function to potential. You can be a smartass without being disrespectful and as long as you do it in a tactful manner - you just might get a really good reference from this guy! Good luck.

Resist the urge. Consider the fact that the operative word in "Smartass" is "Smart."

Be smart, let others play the game that encourages fools to become greater fools at their own expense.
