they exist but to ad to that. if you think its like a normal electric guitar when its plugged in its not. it works by microphone inside the acoustic body so it isnt meant for any distortion or overdrive really not even for an electric guitar amp. they make amps for acoustics.

Ovation makes some excellent a/e guitars, but these are acoustic guitars that are amplified. Taylor just released a guitar called a T5 that is shaped like an acoustic but plays and sounds like an electric guitar. Also check out electric guitars with Peizo or Fishman pickups. Most a/e guitars sound like acoustics that are amplified, not like true electric guitars.

Yes. They make some very fine acoustic / electric guitars. I might suggest this to anyone for their first guitar. Prices can be reasonable with good quality. I own one myself and just plug it into my electric amp. With some "overdrive" it makes a very satisfying electric guitar sound. It's really nice then that you can take it to the park or backyard and strum away with no need for the amp. Good also if you want to wait awhile to buy the amp.

yea, i own an acoustic electric, and 2 electric guitars, and i have been playing for 4 years. i gotta say that if you are looking for a guitar that is going to be primarily used as an acoustic guitar then you should go with a regular acoustic guitar, they sound better in my opinion because of the deeper body giving it a deeper thicker sound. if its going to be primarily electric, go with a good starter guitar such as a samick, which are great deals and they were rated number 1 in customer satisfaction in 2006. i own a samick acoustic electric and a samick flying v, but if you have the money, i recommend a fender stratocaster, excellent guitars.

thats the concept, however acoustic/electrics will not sound as good as a single acoustic or electric.

Depends on your concept of "electric".It will amplify the sound, but it will not resemble an electric guitar.
