There is alot of programs for xp that are not compatible yet with vista. They are getting more and more every day that are compatible. My advice as a system builder who has tried Vista beta is stay as far away from it as you can. I was running a P4 at 3.0 gig a one gig of pc 3200 mem with a 128 8x agp card and it was running as slow as a snail and alot of my programs didn't work under it. Hopefully the new release will be better. But according to the package I had the minimum requirement needed to run Vista. That makes for a very expensive destop.

At its very core, XP and Vista are the same, this means that a program that's based on this core is compatible with both XP and Vista. However, you should know that there have been some BIG changements from XP to Vista. It was contructed from the ground up, so while the core might be the same, the more advanced features might not. This means that while some programs will still be able to run on Vista, they might not retain 100% of their functionality.

Your uni advised you you could have a pc and sent you a itemizing of specs your pc could have? that is somewhat over the staggering isn't it? you're top, that's extremely high priced by utilising itself. try getting it from a pal who makes use of Vista now, and has a spare XP cd. or you would be able to desire to flow to a save and ask in the event that they have any previous laptops interior the storeroom with XP nonetheless on it. or purely tell your college to stuff it and purchase a Vista pc! i'm effective they gained't come and verify out it to make effective it suits their standards.

One of the reasons that vista was delayed so many times was to make sure that software would be backward compatible. So in short, Yes it should work. If you have doubts contact the manufacturer of your software.

ONLY if they have been "approved" by Microsoft.
FYI...
1. Third party drivers won't work unless "approved". i.e. If you buy a cheap digital camera, you may not be able to access it because the driver hasn't been approved.
2. ANY media copied with Vista will be SERIOUSLY degraded. It's a stupid thing they put in for the DRM crap that's going on with music and videos.
