Gecko! Iguana! and I'm sure you'll get a Bearded Dragon! before you pick the best answer. Iguanas are NOT low maintenance, and love to climb, so that one's out. Why don't you go to where you're going to most likely buy your new pet from, ask "What kind of lizard is that?" and then go home and look it up and maybe get a book on it and learn all you can BEFORE you get it so that you get the best lizard for YOU. Because who knows, maybe it'll be Blue Tongued Skink!
Edited to add....

Well I would suggest a Bearded Dragon ,or a Blue Tongue Skink,, both dwell low. yet I would not consider any pet other than maybe fish to be low maintenance ,, Reptiles need to be handled from the start if you wish them to be what we call "Dog Tame" meaning you can pick them up without worry of a bite or panic ,, and they actually like the human interaction,, If you plan on only picking it up when your friends come over watch out ! Make sure you get a young lizard,, don't buy someone elses neglected pet!

well bude the best reptile on market today is a bearded dragon don't listen to those people that tell you to get a leopared gecko or an iguana. first off an iguana is one of the worst the are so taratorial and react to your environment alost as much it ould with it's own and a leopard gecko is nocturnal and it takes alot to be able to handle them they have delicate skin so you don't want to realy hold them alot. now a bearded dragon is the way to go but make sure you handle him every day or everyother or else they wont want you to handle them and thats when when don't want to come out to play.

Kimodo dragon? Sure they can't climb...weighing in at 450lbs. But they can go 30 mph and weigh 450 lbs. I don't recommend one. :)
Iguana?
Iguanas are fast, love to climb, love to climb...bookshelves, lamps, dressers, and will clear a place to sit on whatever surface they are on. and are a nightmare to properly care for. They are 100% vegetarian. They are wonderful, but are not low maintenance.
Bearded Dragons are the best choice, somewhat slow, mellow, terrestrial. no reptile is low maintenance and all have special needs. Lighting, temperature, humidity, diet etc.
If you are in the market for reptiles, buy a book and read it first as to what you are getting into...unless you want the reptile to die from MBD. So do research please.
I very highly recommend the book Terrarium and Cage Construction and Design. It lists different ecosystems, what type of reptile/amphibian lives in that type of climate and all the needs for that type of critter, photoperiod, mating, etc etc. I lean on that book more than any other.

Geckos can be good lizards but some of them would rather bite your finger than let you pick them up. Bearded Dragons are really laid back and usually they are to fat to climb. Plus they live in the desert so they really have no reason to climb.

Bearded Dragon ! Very docile ! Sweet ! East to handle ! Feed them crickets, mealworms, wazworms ! AS they grow to adults you can feed them baby pinky mice ! they need a dry climate. With sand, water dish, heat lamp, uvb lighting ! Also they need to eat lots of greens. Collard greens , mustard greens, and turnip green ! Great pets !

umm well crested geckos are great low maintenance pets. but they like to climb, but its easy to prevent them from getting away from you when you are handling them, as long as your away from walls or anything, and even if they get to a wall, you will still be able to get him before he gets like 3 feet up. they are kind of slow but they like to jump off of things( your arm, the wall of their cage, etc)
