No you don't have to file. However if you had anything withheld for Federal or State income taxes it would benefit you to file to receive your refunds. Also depending on your age and whether you have children or not you may get Earned Income Credit. Without children you must be between ages 25-65. With children there is no age limitation.

If you worked a job and made only $4,000 total last year - you'll get your taxes paid back, so why not? Plus, most states offer free filing if you're under a certain dollar amount. Check out Quicken or Tax Cut.

If it was cash I wouldn't be filing taxes. If it was 4000 from a company, I would because they took money out and you'll be entitled to a refund. That said, I"m not a tax professional and can't really say for sure.

If it was from self-employment, then yes you must file.

If your filing status is married filing separately, then you must file.

Otherwise no, you don't have to. But if you had anything withheld for federal income taxes, you can file to get it refunded to you. If you don't file, you won't get it back.

Tecnically you have file even if you earned zero. ...You can file a short form very easy and will get back any money you paid back...so file and get a refund:)

...oh if you were paid cash and under $600 a month it will not be counted as income.
