The plastic resuable filter that is in there now appears to only filter large air particles. It's a thin black screen and frame. I want to use a store bought disposable filter to help filtration.

i install trane equipment and the only thing we use that filter for is for catching things that fall under the blower wheel.
get yourself a pleated 3m filter and change at regular intervals listed on the package

Absolutely.....What I do and recommend is buy 2 filters ( if you have the space) 1- cheap filter for larger particles and 1- more expensive that is designed to remove smaller particles. If you don't have space for the 2 (most do not) get a filter to remove smaller particles. this must be replaced more and is a little more expensive, but it is much better for your health and keeps the rest of the system cleaner. good luck.

This will be fine. Make sure you change it based on what the filter instructions recommend, and the amount of dust present in your home.
