I don't know. Maybe machines can't wrap it into balls, but they can do it in skeins. That's the only answer that would make sense to me.

If yarn was shipped in balls,grandpa would'nt have anything to do for a day or two while ma made him hold it and she rolled her ball of yard. You ever watched movie's.Only reason i know.

Balls don't hold together as well when shipped or stacked.
