How many civilians did the Japan Imperial Army kill during World War II?

2007-01-26 09:29:39 · 17 answers · asked by Anonymous in Arts & Humanities History

I didn't say how many AMERICAN civilians did the Japanese Army kill, I said how many civilians!

That means, how many Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Laotian, Cambodian, Filipino, Malaysian, Burmese, Indian, New Guinean, Solomon Islander, Caroline Islander, Mongolian, American, British, Australian ect civilians.

I wasn't asking about how many civilians of a particular race or nationality!

Southron 98 - for the record, the Japan Imperial Army battle flag (the one with the red sun rays radiating out from the red sun at the center to the edges) is no longer used in Japan precisely BECAUSE it was the battle flag of genocidal Japanese militarism and was supressed after the war.

The Confederate "Stars & Bars" battle flag is also a flag of racism, genocide and terrorism - it was the banner under which the South launched a war to keep my ancestors in slavery.

After the war it was the flag under which the racist terrorists of the KKK launched a campaign of murder, rape, castration, floggings and arson to deny Black Americans our civil rights.

The Stars and Bars is just as much a flag of war and terrorism as the Imperial Japanese battle flag - and, along with the Nazi German battle flag, they belong at the bottom of the dustbin of history!

Obviously some people only consider "civilians" to be American people...

Well, I don't know, but they killed 300,000 people in Nanking alone in a period of only 6 weeks.

They also killed around 200,000 Asian workers building the Burma railway (it wasn't just allied POWs building it!).

In Indonesia: 1,500 natives of Borneo, 5,000 Indonesian forced laborers, and 1,000 Western and Indonesian civilians.

In total in China they killed around 23 million people. Compare that to the 6 million Jews killed by the Nazis and you might see why the China is somewhat "cold" towards Japan.

If you include all the Filipinos, Malays, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Indonesians and Burmese, the total climbs to around 30 million.

(Edit: people going for a million or a few hundred thousand are sadly way short of the mark. 30,000,000. Big number)

In a war, not a cold war, but a hot war, where weapons are used, there will be atrocities commited on BOTH sides. I am severely disappointed to hear of the biased opinions toward the Japanese. The asker only asked for numbers, not loaded words. My parents have always said that "during war, everyone is crazy. We do things, like rape and murder, and regret them later." It has also been said that "you are not in ANY WAY responsible for the past, but you are for the present and future." You can't blame the generations that came after the 1940s for pulling America into World War II. Since the ones who actually participated in the attack are dead or disabled, there is no one else you can really blame. So to whomever said "they never included it in the textbooks in Japan. They like to pretend they were the victims, and not the perpetrators." In no way are the current generations of Japan responsible for World War II. Keep your biased and misled opinions to yourself.

In China: Nanking alone conservatives estimates are anywhere from 200,000-350,000. I'd go as high as a million or so.

You should read "The Rape of Nanking" by Iris Chang. Very eye opening. I guess the Germans weren't the only ones commiting atrocities in that era. Truly humankind went crazy.

I have no idea how many American civilian casualties there might have been. Certainly nowhere near as many since there wasn't occupation in US by Japanese military.

Oh my gosh, I can't believe everyone is just referring to US casualties. How blind are we to anything outside our own world?

The Nazi's are probably responsible for more deaths because of what they did in regard to their torture and execution of the Jews. In general the Nazi's were more "civilized" in their treatment of prisoners of war. The Japanese , on the other hand, had a much greater propensity to torture and mistreat prisoners of war, in addition to their cruel treatment and torture of civilians (especially the Chinese), that they considered to be on the other side. Who was worse? That probably can be classified as a debate that can never be resolved.

They committed horendous attrocities on the civilian populations that they occupied. The Japanese believed that they were a superior race to the Chinese, Phillipino, Burmese and the island nations. They treated their prisoners like dogs, starving and torturing them and forcing them to work for their war effort.

As far as numbers, I don't know, hundreds of thousands.

If this is refering to the atomic bomb. Think of the blood bath that would have ensued if Allied forces would have tried to invade the Japanese homeland. They would have fought to the last man woman and child. By nuking them, the US, actually saved millions of lives on both sides.

First of all to the drunk Simpson who said the comment about American's killing more, it's because of our military that you're allowed to say that, so be grateful.

In answer to your question, if you're refering to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, The attack spurred the US into entering World War II. US casualties were heavy and included 2,403 dead; 1,178 wounded; 4 battleships, 3 destroyers, 3 cruisers, and 188 planes.

Japan casualties, by contrast, included 64 dead, 1 captured, 29 planes and 4 submarines.

prov356 is exactly right. And that was one city in one country. That doesn't mention that some also killed those they conquered, cut them open, cut out their livers or another organ, cooked it and ate it! Yet, unlike the Germans, little mention is given to Japanese atrocities in school books in Japan. They still pretend as if they were the victims and not the perpetrators.

I'll answer you if you answer me and by the way for these who never believe anything I can prove it. What gawks me more then anything is they killed between 3,000,000 to over 10,000,000 people; yet still PROUDLY FLY THEIR FLAG. Yet Southern cannot fly their heritage in the Confederate Flag a flag that was to have been a peaceful transaction. Now answer me why? God Bless You and Our Southern People.
