I could be wrong so correct me if I am, BUT, I think they release them on pay-per-view before DVD. No, I don't think they're lazy when there's money to be made. Could also depend on how many movies are coming to the theater and therefore pushing the older ones along faster. Seems like some movies go to DVD really fast - usually the crappy ones. Maybe if a movie does real well, they keep it in theaters longer so it just seems like a longer wait. Took forever for the Lord of the Rings movies to come to DVD.

The process of converting a fil to DVD is actually very complex and can be time consuming. Digital films are a little easier and faster, but any good quality DVD has to be digitaized, cleaned, sharpened, and then manufactured, packed, and shipped. Plus the bonus content such as commentary take time.

Once it leaves the theater, thre are all kinds of production, editing, marketing, and distribution issues. Any combination of reasons could contribute to a quick or slow DVD release.
