I'd like to emphasise this is not scientific in any way- it has many flaws, although the link between questions 3 and 4 is not one of them. It is for a simple preliminary flavour, before any regressions are calculated etc and the hypothesis tested. It is not biased in favour of non-Americans.

Does this strange product have any potential benefit of any kind or is it just an excuse to see how stupid SOME of us are?
So here's some questions for YOU, my poor, misinformed, prejudiced friend...
1. How many American states?
2. How many are considered the contiguous states?
3. Name all the countries in the world with two capitals.
4. Name 10 state capitals of any states west of the Mississippi River.
5. Name the 5 largest countries both in population and area.
You can't make a generalization on an entire population of 300 MILLION by asking five questions.

OK,1) I believe "Great Britain" is synonymous with the British Isles, including Ireland, the Isle of Mann, the Isle of Wight, the Sheffield Islands, etc. Whereas the UK is only those portions of Great Britain that are ruled by Queen Elizabeth.
2)Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester, New Castle, York, Suffolk, Norfolk, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast
3)Monrovia, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Tripoli, Tunis, Algiers, Jakarta, Mogadishu
4) General Pinochet was from Chile, South America, I believe.
5) seven, unless you count the Moon, which has been called the eighth continent: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. (Some count "Eurasia" as only one continent, in which case there are only six, unless you count the Moon....)
OK, now you list 10 capitals in Asia, not counting Beijing, Tokyo, or New Dehli, and the five largest lakes in the world, and the 11 former Confederate states in the USA. Ha! How much geography do you know?
However, I think your point is very well taken that most Americans are poorly educated in World Geography. We have a hard enough time remembering the geography of our own continent, much less Africa, for crying out loud.

I am a 39 year old African-American/Native American woman who currently lives in Chicago, IL. I attended grammar school and high school on the Osage Indian Reservation in Oklahoma. I attended college for 2 years but did not finish.

Off the top of my head, below are my answers to your questions:

1. Great Britain is the largest island of the British Isles and contains England, Scotland and Wales.

The United Kingdom is the political union of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and their territories.

2. 5 UK cities are: 1. Birmingham (England); 2. Liverpool (England - home of the Beatles); 3. Edinburgh (Scotland); 4. Cardiff (Wales); and 5. Belfast (Northern Ireland).

3. 10 African capital cities: 1. Harare (Zimbabwe); 2. Lusaka (Zambia); 3. Cape Town (South Africa); 4. Abuja (Nigeria); 5. Niamey (Niger); 6. Monrovia (Liberia); 7. Kigali (Rwanda); 8. Dakar (Senegal); 9. Mogadishu (Somalia) and 10. Accra (Ghana).

4. General Augusto Pinochet led a military coup in Chile (South America) against President Salvador Allende in 1973. Pinochet then named himself President and remained in power until 1990. Pinochet died last month.

5. There are 7 continents: 1. Asia; 2. Africa; 3. Antarctica; 4. Australia; 5. North American; 6. South America and 7. Europe.

1. I believe that the United Kingdom of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland refer to the political state of the United Kingdom. Great Britain is the specific non-continental georaphical area of Europe that includes the area occupied by the United Kingdom as well as the state of Ireland.

2. Glasgow, Belfast, Walsea, Edinbugh, Manchester, Leeds, Dover, Bath, York, Plymouth

3. Tunis, Tripoli, Brazzaville, Monrovia, Khartoum, Johannesburg/Capetown/Praetoria (but I'll just count that as one!), Mogadishu, Addis Abbaba, Nairobi, Lagos.

4. I am unsure of this answer (Chile or Argentina, maybe?) but it is in South America.

5. 7 "continents": N. and S. America, Africa, Asia, Europe, Antartica, Australia although all that divides the Americas is the Panama canal, while Africa and Asia are divided by the Suez, and Europe is just an outcrop of Asia (but Eurocentric historians believed it its own continent so we'll call it that).

Now your turn:

1. Name 3 territories of the United States (no, Iraq and Afganistan are not included)
2. Name 10 U.S. state capitals.
3. Name the four longest rivers contained in or bordering the U.S.
4. What American commanded U.N. forces during the Korean War?
5. Name 7 NATO members.

This is a really fun survey... really.

1. Don't notice much of one. Just Two parts of the full name of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

2. Liverpool, Edinburgh, Portsmouth, Cardiff, Belfast.

3. Tangier, Morocco; Pretoria, South Africa; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Accra, Ghana; Khartoum, Sudan; Mogadishu, Somalia; Kinshasha, Democratic Republic of Congo; Timbuktu, Niger; Tunis, Tunisia; Algiers, Algeria; Tripoli, Libya; Luanda, Angola; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania;
(not certain of a couple of them so I added in a few more for good measure)

4. Chile. It does not geographically matter what country he is in because he is dead.

5. 7; North America; South America; Europe; Asia; Australia; Africa; Antarctica.

Your Questions, while basic, are flawed. When you asked us to name the 7 continents, you forgot to reread them and notice you gave a hint on question #3. How many wrongs answers you were going to allow before stating number 3 was wrong? Question #4 is no longer geographical; it is now a historical question. If you had asked about the longest rivers(Nile in Africa; Amazon in S. America) The Largest Lakes(Caspian Sea in Asia; Lake Superior in North America) or the largest Island in the world(Greenland) I would be giving this questionairre a bit more credit.

I'll answer it this way:
Us Americans are sick and tired of all the America bashing, and much of it takes place in the same manner as your little "research".

For example; my brother was on a plane to Thailand, and had a conversation with two women from Ireland.
They were bashing Americans as being ignorant and backward, because they are supposedly not "well traveled".
They based this on the fact that most Americans don't have passports.
Well, guess what? Our country is HUGE. I can drive for 10 hours a day, and still not be on the other side of the country 4 days later.
Also we do not need passports to go anywhere in Canada, Mexico, Somoa, Puorto Rico, Hawaaii, etc., etc.
In other words, I can visit an area 8-10 times the size of Europe without ever getting a passport.
But these idiots from Ireland just "knew" we were a bunch of bumpkins, because most of us don't have passports.
So, to sum up, I'm not going to answer any of your questions.
I'll do one better:

Let's see some non-Americans answer these questions, and then if they don't know the answer, I'll follow your example and call them morons:

1. What year was gold discovered in California?
2. Who did we purchase Alaska from?
3. What year was the Lousiana Purchase made?
4. What did Abe Lincoln do for a living before being president?
5. List 5 US State Capitols.

See what I mean? There are thousands of facts about all countries, that anyone may have the opinion, that any "smart" person should know.
It's easy to cherry pick your questions, then conclude those who don't know the answers are idiots.
