i know there are many suggestions out there but to win these 10 points for best answer, i want you to tell me why it's so quotable. i mean, if you just put all the quotes on here, yeah, it's great, i'll think "oh cool, i remember that". but i can say that about a lot of movies... what makes YOUR choice so much better than anyone elses? tell me, why is your choice the most quotable american movie (aside from having great lines i mean)?

"Casablanca", because when I first saw it- it seemed I'd already heard all the lines before. But the one we quote a lot is "True Romance"... "What's a Drexel?"

I think Pulp Fiction seems to fit the picture. It gave me some memorable moments, even after watching it more than a dozen times I realize something I did miss before. It has a very special aura (if we can say something like that about such a movie), and there are hundreds of lines which I can not ever forget. I will not quote them right here, since I think it's better to have them heard directly from the movie. This movie is way of life. A way of life I do not agree with, but it is surely lots of fun :)

A movie about life....
The Godfather. It is so quotable because almost every line is advice on life, business/ relationships and the importance of family.
- Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer
- Never take sides against the family, ever
- Luca Brazzi sleeps with the fishes
- Make them an offer they can't refuse

My vote is for The Wizard of Oz. No matter what kind of movies we like as adults, almost everyone who speaks English (and many who don't) saw the movie at least once as a kid. "We're not in Kansas anymore" and "there's no place like home" are phrases that are so established in our culture that sometimes we don't even think of the movie when we use them. My personal favorite, though, is "and your little dog, too!"

Probably Austin Powers movies...once that movie came out everybody was quoting Dr. Evil and Austin. It is a funny movie which is why it is so easy to quote...you laugh and you subconsciencly remember what made you laugh...but even now people say "one million fo fillion dollars" or the whole Zip-It and Shhhh dialogue with Dr. Evil and Scott...will it ever get old...?

I would have to stay the original Star Wars "Use the force" "Luke, I am your father" ...etc.
In "current" movies, I would have to say the original "Pirates of the Caribbean" Almost anyone that's seen it can remember Jack Sparrow's lines. Not so much from the second, he just screamed like a girl the whole time.

Clue: http://imdb.com/title/tt0088930/
It's really a cult classic, to the point of whoever watched it and liked usually ends up being obsessed with it to pont of being able to quote almost the entire movie. I'm one of those people. It's got the most memerable quotes mostly due to the fast that it has some of the most loyal fans, even if they are a little nutty.

Ghostbusters. No doubt.
"And the flowers are still standing."
"Ray, when someone asks you if you're a *God*, you say 'YES'!"
"This chick is TOAST!"
"Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria."
Man at Elevator: "That's gotta be some cockroach."
Dr. Peter Venkman: "Bite your head off, man."
"Listen! Do you smell something?"
"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."
Dr Ray Stantz: "Where do these stairs go?"
Dr. Peter Venkman: "They go up."
"...she sleeps above her covers... *four feet* above her covers."
How can you go wrong with Ghostbusters? Every line is funny.
My second choice: Clerks (I could go on ALL day with that one!!)

The most misquoted movie by far is "Casablanca." Humphrey Bogart never says "Play it again Sam" in the film, but it has been quoted for ages--he actually says: "You played it for her, you can play it for me---play it!"
