these types of games are called RPGs (role-playing games), or more specifically MMORPGs (massive multiplayer online role-playing games).
You can try googling MMORPG for some games that fit the description you just gave.
I know that Dungeon Siege and Dungeon Siege II are some MMORPGs, but you would have to have a look yourself for some highly rated ones.
If you're on about something that was just made for communication (IMVU), then Habbo Hotel is what I suggest.
