Rocky's answer is excellent. Here are some recent albums that I believe play very well, cohesively, beginning to end:

+ Sufjan Stevens -- Seven Swans
+ WILCO - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
+ Coldplay - Rush of Cold Blood to the Head
+ Weezer - [blue cover debut]
+ Alice in Chains - Dirt
+ Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction
+ Metallica - Master of Puppets
+ Radiohead - OK Computer
+ U2 - Joshua Tree
+ Peter Gabriel - So
+ Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
+ Soul Coughing - El Oso
+ Nirvana - In Utero
+ Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
+ Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic

I could go on, but that's a pretty long list already. Depends a bit on what kind of music you prefer.\

-------------------------------

Pull a couple sound bits from the above. If you don't like them, you prob won't like the whole thing. They are pretty consistent in quality.

Other brilliant albums:

+ Sublime - Sublime
+ Libertines - Up the Bracket
+ Yo La Tengo - I Can Feel the Hearts Beating as One
+ Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
+ Sugar - Copper Blue
+ AC/DC - Back in Black
+ Prince - Purple Rain & Sign O The Times
+ Billy Idol - Rebel Yell
+ Michael Jackson - Thriller
+ Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
+ The Clash - London Calling
+ The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow
+ The Beatles - White Album, Abbey Road, Sgt Peppers, Revolver

You are bound to like some of the albums above if you have never heard them. I think, if you were to start off a CD collection with that list, you would be pretty pleased with what you had.

Metallica St Anger is far from brilliant. Master of Puppets or Ride the lighting try instead.

Meddle. Best one of Pink Floyd's. Just never, ever, ever do workouts by it.
