There is a website, Process Library, which allows you to look up a process and see its description (http://www.processlibrary.com/). In your case, this is the information about vptray.exe
Author: Symantec Corporation
Part of: Norton AntiVirus Common
Path(s): N/A
Description: vptray.exe is the tray bar process for Norton AntiVirus. It gives the user fast access to Norton AntiVirus. This process can safely be removed without reducing system security.
Here is the link for more information (http://www.processlibrary.com/directory?files=vptray.exe)

So, you don't have to worry. Norton Antivirus is still protecting your computer. Someone mentioned reinstalling Norton Antivirus and its not a bad idea. If you continue to experience problems, you should seriously consider reinstalling Norton Antivirus. But, be sure to uninstall it first and them reinstall. Remember to use Norton's removal tool (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039)

vptray is the process associated with the traybar icon for NAV. You can disable this from starting within the NAV options and within MSConfig. It doesn't affect system security. Though, if you are getting errors, it's best to uninstall and reinstall regardless. Personally, I would uninstall Norton completely and use something better. AVG and Avast are much better, but also free. If you want to pay for an AV, go with Kapersky or BitDefender - much better.

This is a registry problem, related with Norton Antivirus, the remedy is uninstall and reinstall Norton, this is the solution of 95% of all problems related to software, so I suggest you try it before worrying or taking big decisions like switching Retail paid money protection to free software which is usually bubdled with adware (Adware came with AVG and Avast when I downloaded it).

I had so many similiar problems with Norton and I still got computer viruses when I it said it was working. I took it into the computer store for repairs and they told me to go with McAffee instead. I made the change and haven't had a problem since, it's been over a year now.

Norton sucks and it sounds like you got a resistry bug. After you fix it get Spy-Bot and Enable the Resistry Defender.
