On Homosexuality and Pedophilia...?

Hey, everyone. I've been hearing that homosexuals are bornthat way, and many have cited scientific evidence in an attempt to prove it, such as the hippocampuses in homosexuals being different from those of heterosexuals, and so forth. Evidently, serious scientific investigations are being conducted on th brain and sexuality.
What I am disturbed by, though, is that pedophiles also argue the same point; they say that they, too, are born with an inclination to like children. What further troubles me is that serious scientific investigations are being conducted in this field as well to discover the neurological/biological reason for this. Examples are studies trying to find a correlation between pedophilia and dementia, and psychiatric spectrum disorders, etc.
But if pedophiles say that it is ot their fault, and they're born with it, why do we not accept their natural inclinations? Because it is a disease? How do we know that these differences reported between heterosexual brains and ..

homosexual brains are not the result of some illness homosexuals have. The American Psychological Association used to think it was a disease, until they changed their minds an now it is accepted.
It is true that pedophiles take advantage of the young, but think about it. Many societies, such as that of Rome, thrived despite people having sex with little boys, among a lot of othermoral debauchery. (SICK, I know.)
Even if they were taken advantage of, society could still be functional if this were, too, accepted as "normal" and "right."
After all, homosexuality was not accepted as "normal" in America 100 years ago, but it is now by many members of American society. So, my questions are : why is homosexuality accepted while pedophilia is spurned, if they both can't help it? And how do we know that homosexuality is not a disorder? Did we ever study the correlation between different variables before and after birth and the influence on the child's sexual orientation?

No mudslinging please. Thoughtful, logical responses are appreciated. Thank you.

Oh, and this is in the R&S section because of the relation between the morals of society (especially those held by religion) and such a controversial issue.

Wow! Really good question.
I will be brief: children are treated not as full citizens, nowadays and in our society, but as half citizens with curtailed rights (for example, they do not have the political right to vote) and also limited obligations (for example, they do not have to pay taxes, to work or to be unemployed, but they have to go to school from a certain age), beacuse they are not considered as adults who can make conscious decisions. As they are not completely free, but dependent, they are protected from certain acts, such as sexuality, that they are not consider entitled to perform until a certain legal age. In every country, that age is different, but any adult (either pedophile or not) can have sexual relations with a person under the legal age.
So, this is a penal question, not a psicological issue, here.

This is a very easy question to answer.

We do not accept the natural inclinations of pedophiles because pedophiles, by acting on their desires, are doing acts of harm. Because in our society we consider children to not have the full capacities yet to make decisions for themselves, sex with a minor is non-consensual, which makes it rape. It is wrong because a child can be persuaded or coerced into such relations.

Gay men, on the other hand, harm none in their relationships with other consenting adults.

That's the only reason why gays are acceptable but pedophiles not. Acceptability isn't based at ALL on if someone is born that way or chooses it- it shouldn't matter either way. That's why I continue to aruge that gay people shouldn't ask for tolerance 'because they were born that way'.

This has been answered before, but here we go again.
Whether it's something of nature, nurture or alteration isn't really relevant. What matters is how it affects the individual and those around them.

Homosexuality was dismissed as a psychological disorder, primarily because the body in charge of determining what is and is not a 'disorder' found no evidence that homosexuality itself caused any problems in the individuals or induced them to harm others; social reactions to it were deemed the root cause of any issues they faced.

Pedophilia, on the other hand, *does* lead to causing harm - and that harm is done to the most vulnerable (and arguably, most important) elements of our society, our children. Arguments about whether pedophiles are born that way or raised that way or anything else aren't relevant in light of that. What would be relevant - the *only* thing that would be relevant is evidence disproving the notion that having sex with children is harmful to them.

It's a bit ridiculous to contend that certain persons are born with an ability to distinguish only children as desirable sexual objects - which is what they would have to be doing if this was an inborn trait. But in fact pedophiles see all females, or males as the case may be, as sexual objects regardless of age, as most all of us do in some respect.
However, they in particular are unable to follow the social restrictions against acting on these desires with those designated by society as children and as below the age where their consent can be used as an excuse or reason to engage in sexual relations with them - and especially to engage in such relations without their consent.
Those that ignore these restrictions are a form of sociopath, and it can be argued that sociopaths ARE in some instances born as well as made. But this condition is also clearly seen as a disease or defect. And when it results in pedophilia, that is also seen as a disease and defect in those who practice it.
Comparing the root of these people's problems as perhaps related to the alleged brain differences seen between homosexuals and heterosexuals is like comparing fruits with goober nuts, and I mean that literally.
Now it is of course true that in some respects society still treats homosexually as a defect and a form of disease, and in my view it is NOT true that (as some contend) that pedophiles are mostly heterosexuals gone bad. There are indeed homosexual pedophiles, and society has a hard time with homosexuality precisely for fear that such behavior may be more predominant among them than it actually is. But to deny its existence is to deny that the legion of priests that molest altar boys were not for the main part homosexuals.
The bottom line is that those who are gay WERE for the most part born that way, and as long as they operate in the way that most civilized societies find acceptable, engaging in consensual sex with other adults, then sickness should not be ascribed to that behavior - sickness in the mental arena being in large part an inability to conform to social norms.
And regardless of whether pedophiles were in some ways born that way, as ridiculous as that seems, the behavior is still unacceptable in almost every modern society, and in that sense, the urges that force these people to ignore those restrictions are justifiably referred to as part of a sickness.

What it comes down to is that the "born that way" and "it's a choice" thing is all a red herring. I can tell you that, for me, being gay wasn't a choice. As for whether or not I was "born that way" and what exactly that even means, I won't tell you. Because I can't. And frankly, I don't care. I was born with the same impulses as a straight guy, but for other guys. I can choose whether or not to act on them. What IS important, and gets to the heart of the matter, is that there is no moral reason that I should not act on it. Using secular morality, I'm not hurting anyone. Even if the orientation WERE a choice, it should be my choice to make.

Pedophiles, whatever causes those impulses, should theoretically also be able to choose not to act on them. At very least, they can choose to seek help to not have those impulses, because there is NO WAY to act on them without taking advantage of someone, and victimizing someone.


Pedophile = victim.
Homosexuality = full consent.

I have often wondered this too.
I think it is accepted while other sexual deviancies are not because society has been bombarded for generations now to accept homosexuality as something more than it really is.
Look up man/boy love., a movement born out of the 70's gay rights movement. (Of course many whitewash this fact when trying to distance themselves from the pedophiles)
If Washington had a powerful and rich lobby of pedophiles I am sure after some years we would be celebrating national pedophile month also.

Nope, sorry, homosexuality is an orientation, a predetermined sexual attraction to a gender(or both genders in the case of bisexuals). Pedophilia is not a sexual orientation, by nature it is more akin to a sexual fetish than anything else. Perhaps some actual research into the subject instead of asking inflammatory questions would be in order.

I think we accept homosexuals because it is sexual relationships with two consenting adults.

Pedophilia on the other hand is an adult taking advantage of an innocent child who has no sexual desires. There is no cosent and the child is traumatized for life. That is why we do not accept it we must protect our children from these disturbed people.
