Can anyone tell me how it works? Will it take a lot of space on my computer and is it safe? Also, does it cost anything?

It basically works like any messenger program, with the added quirk of your text appearing above a three-dimensional avatar in the form of speech bubbles. Otherwise, it is no different from using Yahoo messenger. Personally, I find the images to be distracting from the IM, but that's just me.
While it can take a lot of your bandwidth when it's running, it really won't eat up that much memory. It's reasonably safe, and I've had little trouble with it besides some glitches and connection problems.
While it doesn't cost anything to use the service, it does start to cost if you really want to dress up your three dimensional avatar to suit your tastes. Still, there are enough sources of free credits that you can get a good looking avatar for not a lot of money, perhaps none.
