The UN's major problem is the member parties don't keep their word. For example, they pledged to back the AU peacekeeping force going into Darfur with funds and supplies (helicopters, etc.) and those countries (developed ones, since developing ones promised soldiers and actually did send them) didn't give anywhere close to what they promised. We all know what the results were. The UN's visibility makes it an easy scapegoat for impotent members.

Also, in response to the other answers...well, they're mainly crap. The limit a single country can give to the UN financially is 22%. Also, according to The Economist, the UN feeds 30 million people around the world. It has also recently successfully overseen democratic elections (the first ones in 40 years) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; there is a peacekeeping force (MONUC) there with 17,000 UN troops, the largest ever.

Yes, the UN is to blame for mistakes, like Rwanda...but most of it lies with the member states (who purposely ignored proof of genocide). Also, the USA needs to do a lot more. It does not back many major progressive steps, such as the creation of the International Criminal Court (never ratified the Rome Statute that created it). It hasn't signed onto the Kyoto Protocol and went uni-laterally into Iraq. Having people like the former UN ambassador John Bolton (described by "abrasive" by diplomats) doesn't help either. The US needs to improve its diplomatic image through cooperation. As a superpower, America should exhibit leadership.

The Un can't be fixed. It was a stupid concept in 1948, and is an historically proven failure as we speak. The US should be involved in leaving the Un. To strengthen it is to spell disaster for all nations. Especially the US, which is my primary concern. I urge you and everyone reading this to check into HR1146, get informed and get involved. It can be done with a penstroke. Remember, there is a reason congress refused to fund the league of nations as well. We did it then, we can do it now.
Bush isn't trying to fix the Un because the Un is screwed. The best we can say for it is that it's worthless. It needs to stay that way.

HA I love all the people from countries that made money off the oil for food program that have the nerve to call out George Bush. Oh by the way, if it weren't for America, Europe would still be cleaning up after WW2

We can't expect the UN to fix problems when we don't give it the resources and authority to do anything. The UN doesn't have its own troops, but relies on troops that member countries give it.

None! No trust at all. We as American tax payers pay for almost 80% of the UN yearly budget. Time after time they turn their backs on us. It's a dying entity and the US simply need to pull out of and watch it crumble. They are cowards and refuse to do anything in any country. Watch Hotel Rowanda and see how they handled that situaion. It's corrupt and useless. Lets get out now!
