i'm about to start a big, long, cpu intensive task on a laptop.

i have no other choice, as all of my desktops are too old to do it.

what is the highest cpu core temperature that i can let my laptop get to before i should start to worry about damages and abort the task?

if it matters, i have a 1.83ghz macbook with a core duo.

The Core Duo processor introduces new integrated per-core digital temperature sensors and advanced thermal management. One advantage of this is that if a sensor shows that one core is running hot, the thermal system will automatically lower the frequency and voltage to both cores to cool the whole chip off.

Thermal Spec: 100°C

There is a great article on the maximum temperature a CPU can tolerate.

"What is my Computers Maximum CPU Temperature?" -- written by TechNibble (http://www.technibble.com/what-is-my-computers-maximum-cpu-temperature/)

Here are the temperatures for duo core:

Intel Pentium D (dual
core)
Intel Pentium D 820 (2.8Ghz) 63°C
Intel Pentium D 830 & 840 (3.0 - 3.2Ghz) 69.8°C

Intel Pentium Pro
Intel Pentium Pro. 256 or 512K L2 Cache 85°C
Intel Pentium Pro. 1MB L2 Cache 80°C

Make sure the bottom of the laptop has good ventilation. You can do this by placing a pencil under the laptop; it will lift the laptop off the table and allow good ventilation.

It doesn't matter because it will shut down before it reaches critical. That being said, MacBooks run warm anyway and they can reach up to 100C in some areas (namely around the battery) but it usually doesn't. Just don't set it down on a surface where it can't ventilate, make sure the vents are clear and put it on a hard surface like a wood desk... anything but carpet or your bed. Truth be told, I only worry about the temps in my desktop, laptops run inherently warm, though, the MacBook runs at higher temperatures than PC laptops, it still isn't anything to worry about unless it starts shutting down.
