why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will materialised?

This phenomenon bugs the hell out of me. My boyfriend constantly views the contents of the fridge and kitchen cupboards knowing full well that there have been no additions to the food inventory. He sometimes does it more than once in the space of a few minutes. I think he hopes that the food fairy will have visited since his last viewing.

Because you just never know what you might have missed last time. Or you might have a moment of tremendous inspiration and make a banquet type snack out of a dairylea triangle, half a tomato, one egg (2 days out of date), one slice of ham (slightly crusty around the edges) and a scraping of flora (cos that's all that's left). Hey - they can do it in the adverts!!

Yup I do that too, perhaps the left over sprouts may mate with the squashed profiteroles and produce some rare exoxic feast, just go check>>>>> no still (R4P in there.

I don't think they're expecting anything to materialize. I think they're just hoping something that formerly didn't appeal will suddenly begin to look good.

It's a form of lowered expectations.

Believe it or not, I've actually thought about this before and came to this conclusion.

Are you answering your own question?
If you mean "........ will have materialised....." then that is the answer.
If you mean ".....will materialise..." then it's to see what may happen.
