that midnight is 12 a.m. and NOT 12 p.m.? I work as a journalist and I find this mistake almost daily on press releases, websites, and the like. I understand that, as a child, the concept may be confusing. But, didn't we all learn this in second grade?

This is why I love 24 hour clocks :D

But, correct me if I'm wrong, since a.m. is "ante meridian" or "before the middle", and p.m. is "post meridian" or "after the middle", wouldn't midnight and noon both be neither a.m. nor p.m.?

I know it simplifies things to keep noon as p.m. and midnight as a.m., but it makes one think. In one second we go from 11:59:59 a.m. (before) to 12:00:00 p.m. (after), so what's between "before" and "after"?

Wait, what were we talking about? ;)

At least I got that one figured out! I personally like the 24 hour system. It's 16:52 over here right now. Now, would midnight be 00:00, or 24:00?

Since most people don't realize that I, always refer to them as 12 Noon or 12 Midnight.

We relate a.m. to morning. Midnight is mid-night. It's a connection that gets made regardless of our education. The problem is that the word itself contradicts the designation. I'm a writer, and I occasionally slip with this one, too.

There could be many explanations for the question you ask. The right answer is the same as the answer to the question " Why does a purported journalist not know how to use the comma properly?"

I was told that 12:00 is neither AM or PM, it is 12:00 noon or 12:00 midnight.
