I am not AWARE that American Idol exists to humiliate. I was under the impression that people VOLUNTARILY auditioned, and then sign a release allowing American Idol to televise their auditions. On top of that, they(ones who are humiliated) admit to have seen previous American Idol auditions and should be aware of the process, and all that goes with the audition.

I dont think that American Idol and all those involved should be blamed or accused of any wrong doing. Simon, Paula, and Randy just do what all us at home are doing, and that is lauph and wonder why the H*ll someone would get up there and do that. Why didnt their mom, girlfriend, sister, brother, bestfriend, SOMEBODY, ANYBODY TELL THEM THEY SUCKED...

I'm not entirely sure I agree. I do agree with the person above who said they don't force anyone onto the show, they do it of their own accord.

I wondered a lot about why so many would go on the show with such worthless voices. Then I found out how bad I sing. In my own head, my voice sounds very much like Tim McGraw. Its low without being Isaac Hayes/Barry White low, and is one of the best voices I've ever heard. Inside my own head. I suspect it had to do with how my voice resonates inside my throat/ears (which are all connected inside), but outside my head I heard my voice on a tape recorder.

I've never in my life would have guessed I sounded like that. I'm tone-deaf, scratchy, and my voice is wildly out of control (moving way up and creaking or down low and halting all the time). But I didn't realize it until after I had heard it. I suspect the contestansts on the show are doing the same thing. They sound great to themselves but haven't heard themselves for real. So they go on expecting to win and just embarass themselves very badly.

And since no one realizes it can be that far different from their own ears and everyone else's ears, the judges (and the audience) assume they should have known better. In reality, it never occurred to them they aren't as good to others as they are to themselves.

What I do disagree with is how they are told whenever they fail. Simon can be rather harsh (as a matter of understatement). They allow him to do it (or maybe even tell him to do it), but they are shattering people at times. This could get dangerous (if it hasn't already), you may have an attempted suicide sooner or later (or a successful attempt eventually). That's if you are lucky, the one who does it may attempt to take a few others with him/her with a hail of bullets.

They need to stop but it won't until something that bad really happens. I hope it doesn't, but I think its just a matter of time before it does.

I am fairly certain that the makers of American Idol pay these rejects to go in and make a mockery of themselves. If not, then I hope they can't sleep at night for shame. They should start the show with a brief intro to the new contestants, not 4 hours a week of stuff that makes your ears wilt. This program, at the onset, WILL make you dumber for watching.

No, that is not why American Idol exists..
American Idol exists because people watch it
and the producers can sell commercial time...

The people know what they're getting into. It does not exist to humiliate anyone. No one is forced to go on the show.

Probably...they don't realize that over half the people that make it on television in front of the judges can't sing but are still put on national television and again when they do the "look back" on the season.

If you tryout and you are either extremely bad or extremely good they will let you on the show. If you are average, don't look forward to seeing Simmon, Paula, or Randi
