I recently severely bruised my right ankle & during recovery. I am not able to do any aerobics, cycling (stationary) or walking/running...which would put stress on this ankle for at least 2 weeks, per doctor's orders. I am still doing any other weight/resistance training I can that won't further injure myself. Serious suggestions appreciated...thanks!

go swimming at the gym or Y. Swimming puts no pressure on ankles or knees. Swimming is also a good cardio workout

A UBE (upper body ergometer) is a great option for those who cannot do aerobic exercise with there lower body. It is basically a stationary bike for your arms. The problem is that the muscles of the upper body are not as large as the lower body muscles so it is harder to get an equivalent cardio workout, but it can be done. Swimming is also a good option, but it usually requires ankle work. Water aerobics is also a good option because it reduces the impact and weight at the ankle joints.

You might try taking up swimming, though you'll have to see how kicking your legs makes your ankle feel. If it's painful, you can swim just using your arms, which is still a great aerobic workout. To do this, look around at your local pool for a device made out of foam that you put between your thighs -- it helps keeps your legs afloat so you don't have to kick them, and then you use your arms to pull yourself through the water.

Other than that, you might have to lay off the aerobic exercise until you can put weight back on your ankle. In the meantime, keep focusing on strength-building in the rest of your body -- building up your muscles helps you burn more calories even when you're just sitting around doing nothing, so it's still a VERY worthy form of exercise.

Hang in there, and I hope you don't go too stir-crazy from being so immobile! :)
