Brass is a man-made alloy, although it's been made for thousands of years, as it can be made at a relatively low temperature. And, I think you are correct about the copper and zinc being the materials needed.

No elements combine to make brass. To say they combine is to imply a chemical bond and no chemical bond is formed. Brass is a solid solution or alloy of zinc and copper. When warmed, the zinc and copper atoms mix with each other to form brass. A mixture can be separated by simple means.
