Humans refer to the male as man and the female as woman. What about other creatures? Surely the don't use the same terms, do they? What about dwarves or trolls? I am talking about with in the race. not she-elf, elf-woman or woman-elf. but within their own race.

Sidhe ("sheee")
Ban-Sidhe ("bahn-sheee")

I'm not sure than any non-dwarves ever see any dwarf-females (the ratio of male to female being around 30 to 1 to 70 to 1).

Trolls don't have males or females, and their language reflects the idea that they don't think of themselves as a race or have 'fellow-feeling' for each other. They aren't exactly parthenological, nor do they reproduce exactly by dvision like amoeba-s....they reproduce by having a large enough part torn or cut off.

"The f in elfin or elfish refers to tiny-sized elfs (who correspond more closely to the folklore of the Renaissance and Romantic Eras). After much debate, the consensus is elf, álf and related words derive from the Proto-Indo-European root *albh meaning "white", whence also the Latin albus "white", whence Portuguese, Spanish and English albino."

Thus 'elf' could be male or female, same as 'white.'

However, some synonyms seem to be more gender specific-- some more male and some more female.

Synonyms: pixie, imp, sprite, fairy, gnome, goblin, brownie, puck ."

There are more names to choose:
Germany: Elfen, Elben, Alben (the last one was used by Richard Wagner)
Great Britain: addler (obsolete)
Netherlands: elfen, elven, alven
Denmark: alfer, elvere, elverfolk, ellefolk or huldrer.
Iceland: álfar, álfafólk and huldufólk (hidden people)
Norway: alver, alfer or elvefolk
Sweden: alfer, alver or älvor (Älvor translates to fairies)"
Good luck.

I would call a male elf an "elf" and a female one an "elf maiden."

Elves, Dwarves, and Trolls are mythical, not real. So if I called them Goobers, that wouldn't be right or wrong.
