The job in question is assistant to a photographer. If I don't plan to do anything photography-related in college, can the job be a substitution for something like sports or performing arts? I do* plan to take on sailing and newspaper next year, but was wondering if I should forget about getting a job also.

You are way too worried, my friend.

It is true that colleges look for well-rounded students, but they do not have some kind of a checklist wherein applicants need to have one of everything on their application.

Having said that, if you have a job, colleges will understand that you have less time to participate in extracurricular activities. Most students who have jobs develop their work ethic while in those jobs, and that is a positive thing.

While in high school, do what you enjoy. Colleges want to see applicants with strong academic records, very good standardized test scores, and sustained interest and *leadership* in something or another outside of school. Whether that is a job, an extracurricular activity, or a volunteer activity does not matter. Admissions officers want to learn something about YOU by looking at your application. So show your passion for your studies, evidence of focused dedication to and leadership within some outside activity, and a willingness to work hard to achieve your goals.

I wish you every success.
