I have lived in Los Angeles for six years now, and it saddens me to report that the "real thing" when it comes to chicken fried steak has been elusive. Restaurants out here either use the frozen crap or they try to make it from scratch and it is bland as hell. I guess there is not much hope for the city that is too good for Waffle House and Cracker Barrel. I did have one CFS that was pretty good at a hole in the wall diner in Sunland called Sweet Cherries. The steak part was done right but the gravy was a bit disappointing (both were homemade though). So unfortunately, I cannot directly answer your question. But I will give you some pointers to other good Southern food in LA: 1. Roscoes House of Chicken and Waffles. There are several locations but the one on Gower St. in Hollywood is the best one (the one in Pasadena sucks). Best fried chicken I have found in LA, and everything is served with a homemade waffle. 2. Dr. Hogly Woglys Tyler Texas BBQ (Van Nuys). Authentic east Texas BBQ with large portions and tasty side dishes. Brisket and Hot Links....hell yeah!! 3. Le Sisters (Chatsworth). They do Cajun, BBQ and soul food (rumor is the three sisters who started the place could not agree what kind of food to serve so they just serve all three). I cannot speak for the soul food....I am still stuck on the jambalaya!

Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, on Gower Street above Sunset in Hollywood.
Always a crowd, and always worth the wait.
There's also a chain around LA called Louisiana Fried Chicken, but I have never been to any of them, so I cannot personally recommend them.

For fried chicken, I'd recommend Roscoe's Fried Chicken and Waffles.
For rotisserie style chicken, I'd recommend Zankou Chicken.

Roscoe's (several locations) is a great suggestion, so is Dinah's. There are still a few Pioneer Chickens around, I like them cuz I used to have that as a child.

Roscoe's Fried Chicken....it's the only place I'd go. There's one near Crenshaw and also one in Hollywood.
