I don't really. Unless it's a child, then I want to cry. I mean, I understand being "down on your luck" because I've been there for years. But I was able to go into McDonald's while I was about 5 months pregnant, and I still got a job. Now, I have a great job for a cell phone company and have been here for 2 years. If I can do it while being a single mother of 2 kids still in diapers, anyone can do it. Not trying to be mean or anything, but that's just my opinion.

For the most part, no I do not feel sorry for them. Most are homeless because if their own actions (drug use and refusing to quit, refusing to work, or a combination of the two). I once saw a news show where a reporter went to a shelter that was 1/2 empty, then talked to some homeless people on the street. They said they wouldn't go to that shelter because they did not like the rules. The rules were things like you had to clean up after yourself, straighten out the blankets on the cot you slept in, no alcohol or drugs in the shelter, etc. So these people would rather lay out on the street, filthy, cold and hungry than clean up their own (free) dinner mess by dumping the trash in a trash bin. Why feel sorry for someone like that?

Ok to start off not all homeless people choose to be homeless. Yes some are into drugs and drink themselves to death. The ones I have come across are war vets that never got the education because by the time they came back they were to old and depressed and have Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for seeing what they saw. Also they were not prepared when they got the boot out of the military, and are waiting for their benifits from the VA. My hubby was over in Iraq in 2003 and is still waiting for his VA benifits. It took him almost 3 years to find a job, and we were almost homless our selfs. we lost our house our car. Luckly we had family that wanted to help. Some people have n oone to turn too. Yes you might have gotten a job while being pregnant but i'm sure you had to have high school Diplomia or at least a GED alot of these people don't and yes some towns or cities have housing avalible to the homeles but their is a big waiting list. Not all cities have one though. Also minum wage job does not pay for an apartment unless everything is included. And minum wage is also different for every state. Anderson Cooper did a story on a war vet that fought over in Iraq. He got out on medical discharge, is waiting for the VA to get off their butts, he was only getting 200 something dollars for his spine injury. He could'nt work. It was either get an apartment or put food in his belly. He did'nt ask for it. Alot of them have no family no where to go and our country can care less about them. A lot of the Veitnam vets got shoned on when they came back here after all the crap they went through. They had to turn to drugs and drinking back then because of this. What would you do if no one wanted to help, even when you were willing to do anything to get back on your feet. Don't be so quick to judge. You never know one day you might wind up in there shoes. I give when I can no mater if it's a child or not. And it feels good too. All some of them want is a roof over their head, food and their bellies and all they ask in return is to be giving the chance. Thats My 2 cents and then some.

I used to know a homeless man named Richard who was liked by all in the area. He chose to be homeless and people liked him so much they shared with him. Some are so depressed they don't see the light anymore. We might look at them and wonder, but it's not their physical capabilities but their emotional outlook. All you can do is help when you can. Maybe some of them had nothing but unkindness from childhood on and just need an outstretched hand to help them back.

I live in a big city. There are two kinds of homeless people. Those that are homeless for a short period of time due to unemployment, divorce etc, and do as much as they can to get back on their feet. Then there is the homeless that are just looking for a free ride and have no desire to work, or change their current situation. Those I have no sympathy for.

that is a really hard question... because any of us can find ourselves in the position to where we don't have a job... say we become ill or a family member becomes ill ... all of us could be one pay check away from being homeless. Yes we should feel sorry for those that are less fortunate and we should lend a hand... now that being said... I do not feel sorry for those that choose to stay that way... I will don't mind a hand up... it's just the hand outs... that piss me off!

Some of them, YES. I know that not all homeless people are addicts who have no sense of responsibility. There are some people who try and some people who don't want to. I know a guy who ruins every job he gets, thus making himself homeless all the time. One might think he prefers it that way, because he hates rules. We all know that we must follow rules if we are going to live in society. Some don't want to do that and they create their own hell and you can't help those who don't want to try. But I feel sorry for those who just can't seem to get out from under no matter what they do. I am happy for those of you who try and succeed, but I feel bad for those who try and fail, too.

Some have mental problems and can't hold a job. Some are depressed from being abused as a child. Not everyone is like you, so don't judge them by your standards.

Well aren't you special. Of course I feel sorry for homeless people. Having a job, esp if it's minimum wage, doesn't mean you can afford a place to live.

I find some of them really scary and annoying, but its hard not to feel sorry for them.
I think that a lot of them need psychiatric help, hence the government should have them forcefully institutionalized! ( I sorry! but I really feel that way!)
