Um I'm not sure what 8yr old boys are into besides soldiers and guns. I want to stay away from that. I just need some ideas. Anything to help.

Go to www.familyfun.com and click on their birthday parties. They have great themes and tell you all you need. When my kids were little we used them many times.

Books: The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis
If he is an avid and skilled reader, perhaps The Hobbit

Gameboy & games for it

Chess/checkers/backgammon set
Board games

K'Nex (like legos)
Legos

Music lessons/instrument (keyboard)
Art lessons/pads/drawing equipment etc

Sporting equipment: soccer ball/soccer trainer (net w/elastic cord); Hit-a-way; Pitch-Back; basketball, football

Take him to a museum & get him something from the gift shop that he finds interesting, or to a concert of a musician he likes & get him a CD & T-shirt.

I took my 9 year old son to the WHO (he likes their music), got him a T-shirt and an encore DVD of the concert. The DVD is a birthday present, the concert was just because it might be a once-in-a-lifetime event.

EDIT
after reading your question again, I perceive you are asking about the PARTY and not the PRESENT. Lazer Tag is good, can also try museums, especially science museums with 3D or IMAX movies. Chuck E Cheese or McDonalds is below 8yr olds, so avoid those. Renting a moonwalk/space bounce (inflates with air from squirrel cage blower & kids jump inside it) will go over well if weather permits, but make sure it is the kind that can be completely enclosed with zipper or cords so no one falls out. If the kids are musically inclined, can do karaoke, but it's risky as to how it goes over.

Do the moonbounce if you can, it's inexpensive and memorable and goes well with pizza, soda, and cake. You can set it up in the yard and add a movie or indoor games if needed. A Pinata is a nice touch, especially if consonant with your theme.

My friend has an 8-year-old son as he's very into Pokemon and Nintendo DS. Are you looking for gift ideas or party ideas? For gifts, you can't go wrong with video games. For parties, why not take him and his friends to the movies and have a birthday party there? Lots of movie theaters do that now. You reserve space ahead of time and they bring the kids popcorn and drinks and stuff. And just choose something like Night at the Museum.

Have a superhero party. Have the kids come dressed as their favorite superhero. You could have a cake made to look like your son's favorite hero, ice cream and giveaway small goodie bags with stickers, superhero trading cards and little hero figures. You could play games and take lots of pictures.

Have fun with it. They're only young for a short time, you know but I bet he'll remember it for the rest of his life. ;)

Good luck!

My son is turning 8 on the 1st. We are having a stay overnight party and purchasing UFC on pay per view. He is in wrestling, 1st place every time but one, brag brag, and he loves UFC. We just buy a bunch of junk food, and let the boys have the downstairs, while we take the upstairs. Then they can stay up late and watch tv and eat crap, and not keep us awake. They love it!!! ;p
