We have reason to believe that my wife is part Maori, but it is important to get proof of this. I've read that DNA-based testing of the inhabitants of the Orkney Islands revealed them to be largely Norwegian by DNA; that is precisely the kind of test we think would be right. Does anyone know where to get a test like that done?

Thanks.

National Geographic is doing a worldwide DNA testing project to trace people's ancestry. You can view the website here to learn more about it:

It seems exactly like what you are looking for, but it is a little pricey $200-$300+ (USD) depending on if you want just your paternal roots or both your maternal and paternal roots traced. It seems like a very interesting project and they have more tools for tracing your ancestry online.

Hope this works for you!

Read "The Seven Daughters of Eve" This talks about mitochondrial DNA and how it can be used to trace ancestry. The guy who wrote it was a proffesor at Oxford. In the book there was some info about how you can get testing. I know this is kinda vague...sorry....I'd go with the National Geographic site. Good luck!

there's a company called "ancestry by DNA" that does it for a small fee, I had mine done by them, it was pretty interesting and surprising
