Lying in the sun heats the body up, and we generate heat internally when we move around a lot. So for some people, the body compensates by making us sleepy so we don't move around and generate that extra internal heat. Its the body's way of dealing with the additional heat being absorbed.

Some people feel sleepy in sunlight because of the comfortable warmth that goes along with the sunlight. It is caused by the infrared energy that accompanies the light. It's like having a warm blanket to sleep under.
