I went to an interview today (county) and I wasn't in there for even 10 whole minutes. I was probably the sixth or seventh person they interviewed (I saw my name on the list as she crossed it off) it was right before lunch...

I fit the job perfectly in terms of experience, I dressed well, spoke well. But it seemed as they just ran down their list of questions and didn't ask too much from me. I gave them detailed answers and related my experience to their questions. I was also prepared with a resume and references which they should have had, but didn't. Seemed as though I had to offer them information on my background and experience, and they didn't even know (like they didn't look over my resume before I walked through the door).

I think it may have been one of those situations where they already had someone in mind.

Anyone got a job with an interview like this???

CHEF: When we were done, I had to ask when/if I would hear from them. They said they would get back to me regardless of the decision in a couple of weeks, and that if I was selected, I would then have to pass a security clearance.

If it was an interview with the county, more than likely they had someone else in mind. It's nothing to take personal, I know that's hard. Government jobs, including local government have procedures to follow. If they have a person in mind for a job that's being open for interviews they will have to interview everyone that's on the list before the person they want. So say the lucky person is 15 on the list, 14 other people have to be interviewed (unless they waived the interview) in order to get to the person they want for the job. Unfortunately, that's how it works. I wouldn't give up though, good luck!

I have had interviews like that. Where the interviewers actions were racially motivated (speed reading through the questions, etc.). I even worked for a place that told me not to pass along messages from phone applicants that had accents. Bigotry is still out there!

I would call the County and State Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and let them know about this experience. Say you want to make a formal complaint. The more that people of color officially complain about this type of behavior the less common it will become.

If you were qualified enough for the interview, then you were qualified for the job. What in 10 minutes time could have changed their decision. Come on?

The same garbage recently happened to my sister - who was actually overqualified for a position. She works for the federal government - so she is filing a complaint. I suggest you do the same.

Better things are on the horizon. You want to be in a place that will accept you as you are! Hang in there.

I've had many job interviews like that. It's just part of the process of finding a new job. But what you don't want to do is give up too soon. It took me two years to on board with the company I'm with now. I did work some lesser jobs to get by in the mean time, but I was persistant.
Followup with the people you interviewed with. Ask them if you could meet with them again to have an informational interview, a chance for you to ask questions about the company or governmental department. Keep your resume updated with your accomplishments and craft cover letters that will get their attention. If you know people in the company you're interested in, ask them to help get your resume to the hiring manager so it doesn't get lost in the HR department. Getting to know the people you'll work for is how you become the person they already have in mind when they interview others.

Of course you had a shot at it, and from what you're saying, you did a great job! If they don't hire you, it's their loss, and you can find some place 100x better.

I'm sure almost everyone's had an interview like that, or maybe just applied for a job and never even got a response back from anyone.

Also, maybe it's just that they were really hungry. Since it was right before lunch, and they might've been in a hurry to get some food in their stomachs, lol.

From my personal experience, I can tell you were probably:
1.over confident about getting the job,
2.you probably had an arrogant swagger when you entered the room and your interviewer noticed that.
3. might of acted in a very nonchalant manner
4. left a distasteful first impression.
5. possible over/under dressed.

I honestly doubt any interviewer would quickly go through an interview like that. So it was probably your personality that ruined your career opportunity.
Better luck next time :-)

B T W when they were done, what did they tell you??

YES that has happened to me a few times. I went in and they read off a list of questions with basically no follow-up questions. Just one after another... I could tell they weren't the least bit interested in me, even when they call US in for the interview!!!

Sounds like they already had someone chosen and were just checking you out to see if you might do a better job than the , Brother, sister, cousin, buddy, girlfriend. Don't take it personal, although it is a crap way to do things, it has been done for years.

its happened to probably all of us at some time, don't worry about it, just think they are the ones missing out, and apply for more, something will come up maybe better than what you thought
