I need some ideas on how to teach them the proper man to man defense; as far as staying with your person, help side defense, stopping the ball and so forth.
What are some good strategies to also help with being slow. They arent as fast as the other teams and have trouble getting back on defense in time...what are some things that I can do to help? Thanks

To compensate for lack of individual defensive skill you may want to try a zone defense approach. I recommend the 2/3 zone defense as it alleviates the pressure of the defensive assignment b/c you no longer have to search for your defensive match up after a shot is missed. Its also much easier for players that age to get back to their assigned defensive zone. This should also aid in stopping the ball defensively.

The major weakness of the 2/3 zone defense is if the other team has good outside shooting, but this should not be an issue as young players are typically not that strong or accurate and need to get close to the hoop. Also, b/c of assigned areas rebounds may suffer but this can be helped with rebounding drills.

As far as trying to stop the ball and create turn overs you can try a press defense but this most likely will not work for you giving the current conditions of your team. What you can do is a 1/3 zone defense and apply either your best defender or whom ever has the best stamina to the point guard. Using a one man press can help wear down the opposing team's ball handler, creating turn overs.

You pose a lot of important questions. Begin with one on one stuff, defending the ball or defending one pass away (deny defense). Then you build up to two on two or three on three, then four on four. In four on four, otherwise known as a shell drill, you begin by teaching "jump to the ball", moving towards the ball with every pass, constantly adjusting, then teaching "help and recover" to stop drives as a team. After that, teach how to deny a cutter.
One core idea in defending the ball and maximizing quickness is to get into good defensive stance and staying in it. Knees bent, tail down, weight off your heels. This is a position of quickness. Emphasize that the game is not to be played on straight knees.

I believe that getting beat down the court is an issue of insufficient hustle rather than insufficient speed. Watch how soon they move to get back; you will likely see them leaving too late.
Also, you must train the kids to react sooner to getting back and also insist that they not hassle a defensive rebound, but get back fast.
There is a lot of detail that I have not included that would help answer this question thoroughly. Email me if you wish for more input and perhaps more specific questions and needs you have.

If they have trouble keeping up with other teams, try a 2-3 Zone. I don't know if that'd be too complicated, but it would help neutralize the quickness advantage of the other team.

You could also try teaching them to switch if there are picks. Instead of staying with their girl, have them rotate to the screener. This may also be too much for beginners.

Make sure they know to keep the girl they are covering in front of them and try to never turn their back on the basket. When playing the girl with the ball, watch the waist and keep their hands up.

It depends on how good the other people on the team are. but if you know how to shoot you will have no problem. Just practice dribbling and watch some games on tv so that you understand the rules. Yes you need shoes. Tips. 1. Practice Dribbling. 2. Learn the rules. 3. Keep shooting. 4. always hustle on the court. 5. Most important, have fun.

Do they have to play only man? Can they doubleteam?

In practice, line them up across the baseline with their backs to the length of the floor. Have them all get in a good defensive position. Have them move backwards while you indicate which direction. Make sure they know to watch the midsection of the person they are guarding, not the head or ball.
