The fit of your running shoes is important no matter who you are. I make sure they're snug around the ankle becuase I don't like them slipping around. I buy Nikes because they are most comfortable to me and they don't stretch out. Under Armor running shoes will stretch out, I've heard. I wouldn't buy them online because you need to make sure they fit. A fair amount of padding, and if you're worried about your knees you can get once with extra shock absorption. Just make sure they're comfortable. If you run every day you'll need new shoes every 6-8 months depending on your weight and how far you run.. Not sure about basketball shoes, but I imagine you'd want ones that provide extra stability for your ankle? Overall I'd say that the brand of shoe actually does matter - Nike, Asics, Adidas, etc. are reputable international brands that have been around a while and should know how to engineer a shoe to protect your feet and help your performance.
