I am a single guy in his mid-20s about to move to Akron, Ohio for a job. I need an apartment that's decently priced (say $500 or so at most). Where should I live?

I strongly advise you to reconsider living in Akron. If you work in Akron, go live in Kent or Cuyahoga Falls. Much nicer, much quieter, probably cheaper. If it's Kent you settle on, beware ASW realty. They have decen stuff, but they will never fix a damn thing in your apartment. Good luck!

Probably outside of Akron, perhaps in Kent or Stowe.... Akron is a big city, loads of crime. It is also a college town, University of Akron, so the rents are going to be jacked up some because of the high student population. Kent is a college town too, but is less expensive and relatively safer. If you have to live in Akron, proper try to stay clear of any apartments by U of Akron. That's my best advice, I live in Ohio, and grew up not far rom Akron, so I know of what I speak....Good Luck!

Besides LeBron James, I believe Goodrich and Firestone as well as the Stan Hewyt Hall owner (might have been Stan!) were from Akron. If you have time, see if Akron has an Historical Society because they could help alot.

One of the suburbs west of Akron is called Fairlawn. You might want to look there. Also, some of the eastern suburbs are pretty decent as well. I grew up there and lived on the west side of town and on the east side.
The biggest problem you might have is finding something decent for $500. You may have to go more than that.
Or, call a realtor to see about a good location that is in your price range.

Cuyahoga Falls, Ellet, Firestone Park, West Akron, Fairlawn...All these places are very nice...The Crime rate in these parts of town are very low..Akron over all is very nice I've lived here for 27 years..It is not a college town at all...The college takes up a very small portion of Akron..Good Luck!

Outside Akron would be best. If you are looking for a nice safe area that is moderately priced Cuyahoga Falls is your best bet, it is just north of Akron.

I'm not sure if craigslist is supported there, but you could also look into AkronSuperAds which is a decidedly local venue:
