I have never owned a macintosh machine, but I am very interested/curious to get an iMac. My favorite stuff to do on the computer are multimedia, pics, videos, websites, music, and internet. I've heard iMacs have nice features for those types of things. My fiancee calls iMacs "communist". He says I'd better not get one. He won't give me a REASON. We already have two PC's and two laptops between us. (We both had one of each before we got together). Why does he hate them? It's just a machine (aka a toy for me)

I am enjoying the replies so far. And from what a few have said, i am beginning to think he hates them because he is an avid gamer. BUT he has his own gaming PC and would have no reason to touch my machine, if I had one....

Well, most people are loyal to one brand--PC or Mac. Traditionally, Macintosh computers are more efficient and easier to use. (However, if you're used to the Windows operating system, a Macintosh is a big switch and has the potential to be very disorienting.) Macs are extremely powerful, and so most graphic designers and film makers use them. However, for Internet, which really depends on the program and your connection, no computer is better than the other. An advantage of PC's is that pretty much all programs work on them. Only some programs are available for Macs. If you're into gaming, a Mac poses some problems. Also, in terms of music, if you use an iPod, you'll want to stay with a PC. iPods can only be used with one kind of computer at one time. If your iPod is programmed to respond to Windows and you plug it into a Mac, you will be forced to format your iPod (delete all songs) to get it to work, and vice versa. If you switch your iPod between your numerous computers, stay with PC's. If you're used to PC's, I'd say stay with what you know. Why fix what isn't broken?
Congrats on your engagement!

I'm with your fianceé. Those new mac commercials are a total scam - PC's can do all the multimedia things that macs can do just as well for the average user - it's true that most multimedia studios use macs, but the it only makes a difference when you are a _very_ advanced user. For the average person, they are better off with a PC since the availability of software is much better, and it will be easier for you to share files and such with friends, since they all have PC's more than likely.

Another reason to get a PC is the price. Since dozens of companies make PC hardware, there is a healthy amount of competition in the market that keeps prices down. Since the only manufacturer of mac hardware is mac, they have a monopoly and can (and do) charge a lot more for their computers.

Also, don't believe that 'macs can't get viruses' crap. Completely untrue. Macs get less viruses than PC's, but only because there are less around. If you are going to write a virus, you pick the largest possible target - the windows crowd. But there still are viruses for macs out there. Why else would they sell antivirus programs for macs?

Some people hate macs because they won't run the majority of software on the market.

If you are strictly using it for the things you listed, then you could easily use a mac. Your fiancee probably is just sick of watching those stupid condescending Apple commercials that make it sound like pc's are a bunch of old pieces of junk while Macs are hip and 'with it'.

There really is no reason (past the lack of software titles) to hate macs, calling them 'communist' makes him sound like a cold war era McCarthy follower. They use intel processors now (you could feasibly load windows onto one), they do have a pretty decent O/S (of course anything is going to look good compared to microsofts clusterf**k of the week).

All computers have one thing in common - they will only work well if the person using them knows what they are doing. Otherwise they are all just useless hunks of metal and plastic.

Well I should tell you I use Mac and Windows and I love them both, but I think Mac is the best for multimedia since iMacs have front row. I own a MacBook and I LOVE it. They do everything windows does just as well or even better. (especially for video and audio editing)
You could even get Boot Camp and run windows on it also, so you can run Windows-only programs. Boot Camp is available as a free download from www.apple.com. I would reccomend doing this also if you are a PC gamer because I will admit Gaming on computers is MUCH better on Windows. Other than that, go Mac.

I've owned computers for year, and purchased my first mac this year. I'll never go back. I am hooked and love this computer. YOu know the commercials they have now with the out of shape guy and the cool Mac guy??? Its just like that.. PC's suck compared to a Mac... Everyone here that says no to a Mac, doesn't own one, or is full of crap. There is a huge local mall in Tampa that has many computer stores. I want shopping for a new computer and visited all of them All the stores were empty of clients except the Apple store. It was hopping. If you want to save a buck, stay away, if you want the best, invest in one. You won't be disappointed. I promise.

No computing gadget, consisting of the iMac, comes with MS workplace. some have trial variations, yet none incorporate the entire version. you should use Libre workplace, Open workplace or Neo workplace, all unfastened, or purchase MS workplace 2011 for Mac or purchase iWork.

Go ahead and buy the Mac, you will find out very quickly why he hates them, and you will have waisted your money. Go out and buy something with Windows. I hate Microsoft, but I had Apple even more. Windows is better. I would also wait until Tuesday, that is when Windows Vista comes out.

I recommend them. They are immune to SpyWare, viruses and phishing. They are made for projects like you said, pics, videos, music, etc., and they also come with Microsoft Office. PC's are made for work, get hurt by viruses, SpyWare, etc. fast and easy and don't come with as many fun options. I recommend an iMac.

Since most computers are made in China these days, I guess they are all communist!

Go with the mac.
