I think "a rock" is a rough fragment of "rock". While "rock" is a material, or what it is made of, a "stone" is "a rock" that has been given a finish by natural erosion. I picture a stone as either a hand held smooth rock or a large boulder. Either way, it is usually more round in shape and usually is missing the edges that a jagged rock would have.

that is very interesting! i think it is the same! One could be bigger than the other but they both pretty much feel the same, HARD! The only thing is they are all different shapes and sizes.
