I have an 1856 gold coin that is very rare. I want to sell it but I think I may need to have it authenticated first. How would one go about doing something like this?

Theres two places that come to mind that will grade you coin. When the coin gets graded, it gets put in a permenant plastic display case, along with the year, name of coin, and grade on a label. A picture of this case: http://www.pcgs.com/aboutus.chtml

I have used PCGS twice before, they were the cheapest and were the easiest of the two companies, when it came to dealing with the public's personal collection.

Check out http://www.pcgs.com/submission_center.chtml for prices and to see if there are any local people in your area that can handle the submission for you. Otherwise, you have to send the coin to them (recommend insured shipping with post office).

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coin_grading for more info on what coin grades are.

Having the coin professionally graded adds value to the coin too and makes it easier to sell. The difference in grades can change the value significantly. With it graded, there will be no question in your or the buyers head. THey can look up the value in a book or something, based from the grade stamped on the case.

Being a coin collector, I can tell you that I would only buy a rare coin if it is certified by NGC (Numismatic Grading Company)

Go to http://www.ngccoin.com/ and then look up how to get the coin certified. I will tell you that any grading company will charge you. When you get it certified, do not let anyone rip you off. You can look the price of Gold up at http://bulliondirect.com/index.jsp too.

Take it to a coin dealer that submits coins to PCGS or NGC or go to the ANACS website wwww.ANACS.com and down load their submission form. These are the top 3 grading and authentication services.
