If we don't want to give them back any of their tax dollars to rebuild, that is fine (remember, they pay those tax dollars too) But should we keep taxing the hard working citizens of New Orleans to pay for rebuilding OTHER nations? The poor aren't the ones rebuilding, or running the stores. Those people haven't even moved back. I'm talking about tax paying citizens who have moved back and are rebuilding.

of course, unlike Iraq, we could put some time frames on when that assistance would run out...

If fededral goverment has no place in rebuilding after a disaster, why do they control the disaster insurance, and disaster preparedness campaigns?

they need local funds for policing the city, and getting schools back up and running. their crime rate is through the roof. Maybe we should leave the blame aside for a moment

after state farm was sued, they finally started paying out on policies...THIS WEEK. Should the people have to wait for insurance and spend their time and energy making these companies pay out? I'm realizing how few of you actually know the details of the situation

RLP, it doesn't surprise me that you couldn't see the problems...hard to see from an Ivory Tower. Ask Nagin

New Orleans and several parrishes pay a dedicated levee tax for the maintenance of the levees. There are levee commissions established to collect the tax money and make sure the levees are maintained.

New Orleans and Louisianna got over 40 billion dollars after the flood and had the government pay to replace the damaged levees that were not maintained by the levee commissions. (They weren't able to maintain the levees but the non-partisan commissions were able to sponsor fundraisers for Nagin.)

The residents of NO should ask the federal government to audit the levee commissions and ask for a federal probe into the mismanagement and possible malfeasance of the levee commissions and the elected officials of NO for the manner in which the levees were neglected and the flood allowed to happen.

I would say that they should be considered for a special tax exemption for rebuilding because that will increase the value and eventually add to the tax ratables. But since they reeelected Nagin they deserve no special consideration.

It's supposed to keep them out of politics, but it obviously doesn't work as the huge amounts of money some of the churches pump into political causes makes abundantly clear. As someone who works with the very poor and the homeless on a daily basis I can assure you the vast majority of them absolutely do NOT "help others". The only two in my area that do anything significant besides us Heathens and Pagans in my Kindred are the Catholics and the Salvation Army. My Kindred is tax exempt but pay our taxes anyway because we like having things like roads, fire departments and backup from the police when we need it. It is also the responsible thing to do, and we're very into being a responsible and contributing citizen in all areas of life. The rest of the churches in the tri-county area we serve run a weekly food pantry IF they do anything at all for the community. They definitely need to be taxed.

The big problem is that the Katrina affected areas, have received some ten billion dollars already. What has the state and local governments done with the money? They should continue paying taxes just like the rest of us. And, no, most of those in New Orleans, who were displaced, did not pay a lot towards taxes. Most of them lived off the backs of the rest us tax payers.

Are you kidding?!?!? New Orleans has received tens of billions of dollars in aid from the great people of America! They need to start paying for their own mistakes.

The people of New Orleans dug the hole they are in by electing crooked politicians and allowing them to steal their money and neglect their city. THEY RE-ELECTED NAGIN FOR CHRIST SAKE!

They should be charged double federal taxes so they can pay back the rest of the country for having to foot the bill for one of the biggest screw ups in American history! The whole country knew what would happen if a Hurricane hit New Orleans! The writing was on the wall for years! Yet the citizens of Louisiana repeatedly elected dishonest politicians. They just re-elected a congressmen who was caught with $100,000 in BRIBE MONEY!!!!

There is no excuse the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana was so ill prepared for the hurricane. The blame lies squarely on the shoulders of the fine people of Louisiana and New Orleans. Not the rest of the country!

Why just New Orleans. Did not Mississippi get hit to? What happened to those people. Oh wait they are rebuilding and not whining about it. Yes they should pay taxes and they should have to pay back the money they wasted from FEMA. The only reason you hear about New Orleans is because of the race of the majority of inhabitants. I say suck it up get to work like Mississippi has done.

9 billion dollars, yes, 9 billion went missing from the funds to rebuild Iraq under this administration. Could that money have been used elsewhere???......hmmmmmmmm. Maybe here at home to help rebuild after Katrina?? I wonder where it went.hmmm I think that instead of paying federal taxes directly to the government this year, we should be able to allocate funds directly towards Katrina victims instead.

No, but I might be for them being exempt from state and local taxes. That is where the real fault is, and we should insure that the local parish bosses and the corrupt state government don't have a say in the rebuilding process.

NOOOOOOOOOO! Should my family's farm be exempt from paying taxes because a tornado ripped our barns down? They need to live just like the rest of us and deal with the fact that they chose to live in an area which is prone to hurricanes. If they can't deal with it then they shouldn't have lived there in the first place. And none of that, "Some of them don't have a choice because they're poor" crap. If they wanted out badly enough they would find a way.

I was just in New Orleans last week. It looks fine. Yes we should tax them.

The parts that are not fixed yet are the ones where no one had insurance because they did not work. The government supported them. Well I am sick of supporting them - GET JOBS. We sent MILLIONS down there and Nagin and the Gov. should have this under control. I am sick of everybody expecting Gov bailouts for everything. Those who were insured are fine and the business district is fine.

Our ship traveled 6 hours down the Mississippi before we hit gulf. I saw a lot of neighborhoods that were fine. If you choose to live in a place that has hurricanes YOU assume that risk. I choose to live in WI where that doesn't happen and I have home insurance.

I don't think they should be exempt from federal taxes.
If they don't pay it back just go to Jefferson's frig I am sure there is enough there to pay it back.

The hard working people of New York had to rebuild.
The hard working people everywhere in the U.S. who are rebuilding after their own diasters aren't whinning like New Orleans.

So I say tax them like everyone else.
