I had a gamertag but no longer have xbox live..if i buy the 12month membership well that renew the old gamer tag?

All Xbox360 Gamertags get the Silver Version of Xbox Live free of charge. That being said, you still have the live account associated with the Live gamertag. Just Click on join Xbox Live on the Dashboard and the select Recover Gamertag. That will bring you back up to a screen asking you to verify your email address and password associated witht he gamertag and you'll be good to go. Then just update your membership to Gold.

ok from this textual content your question is how come i am going to't get on xbox stay gold even although I redeemed it? Is that it? properly there should be numbers on it merely bypass to redeem code contained in the marketplace. If that isn't any longer operating you delete your account off the memory then get better the gamertag that is how I were given mine to artwork.

Yes. You should be able to sign in using the old gamer tag. You can also go on to XBox.com and use that same gamer tag to check your status and to see if your account is still active.
