Is it legal for them to refuse me a refund or even a credit note or exchange. I have had the router only 9 days and they say that it works and that the box is open so they can not help me, seems illegal to me! Who do I contact?

Many Thanks, Matthew.

There's no defect or fault, so why should they ACCEPT it back?

Under consumer law, an item has to be "fit for the purpose for which it was intended". And your router was fit to be used for its intended purpose.
Shops only HAVE to offer a refund or exchange if an item is faulty or doesn't do what it is supposed to do. Under these circumstances you can choose whether you want a refund or exchange.
However, to maintain goodwill, many shops will offer a refund, exchange or credit note if you take an item back simply because you have changed your mind, or don't like it. Their terms and conditions will be displayed in the shop or on the back of the receipt.
Obviously, PC World doesn't offer this goodwill, so if you don't like it, the only choice you have is whether to shop there in the future.
Personally, I can't see why they have this policy as many shops like Argos will take things back even after you've opened them, but they are under no obligation to do so.

In the UK - Under the sales of GOODS ACT - you can return any item that is under 28 days old (unless medical items and personal wear - ie underwear etc) just quote not fit for the purpose - wrong colour > shape or does not represent what the picture is on the front etc etc

They must give you either a refund, exchange or credit note - they can not refuse you

Contact Trading standard regarding this - or go in a kick up a stink and quote the SALES OF GOODS ACT and if not accepted back then going to contact trading standards

Usually in PCW if you start shouting loud enough and demanding to see manager then they back down

Hope this helps

Many items such as that have a "no return if opened" policy . A checkout girl at Circuit City once save me a big headach once when she noticed the sealed box felt "empty"...she opened it and it WAS EMPTY! It was suppose to have Windows XP in it. Had I paid for it and opened it there would have been no way for me to prove otherwise - no refund.

Moral : Always read their return policy, be positive it's what you want and need before you open it, and, the new one for me now, BE SURE IT"S IN THE BOX.

PC World are a bunch of robbing bast*rds. They pull this sort of **** off all the time. I hate them and their over priced crap.

They draw people into the shop with cheap offers then screw people over on all the accessories.

They also try to bamboozle people who don't know anything about PCs and end up selling them pointless 5 year Warrantys on the idea that something will go wrong. They are a bunch of thieving f*ckers and no - one should go there.

Sorry mate - just had to get that off my chest!

Unless its faulty they dont have to refund you. They are just being arses about it. Just spread the word.

I used to work for pcworld, and yes this will be correct. As the item is not faulty and you have opened the product then they do not have to refund you.
This is company policy,as they will have to sell the item at a cheaper price due to the fact you have opened it.

That is a legal return policy. Many places offer exchanges only no returns.

If the item worked as stated why don't you want it?

They are in the right. You made a contract, you gave them money, they gave you a device that works. If the item was faulty they would have broken the contract. You opened the box and the item works. No comeback.

It is legal. It is probably even in the order you signed. Normally, you can return hardware, but the seller charges a "restocking fee" whatever the he.. that is. Best Buy charges 15%. You'd be better off selling it on e-bay.
