I think I have a cracked head gasket, because my coolant my sludgy which was making the car start to run hot. Is this the type of repair you can trust with a garage, or should this be strictly a dealership repair? I can afford the repair(probably) I just don't want to risk taking it to a place that will wrongly identify the problem, fix the wrong thing, and the same problem keeps happening....

If anyone has a different diagnostic opinion, feel free to share. Basically the coolant was sludgy so I had it flushed and filled....the next day I was driving and the engine temp kept rising until almost in the red, so I shut the car off and the coolant was all over the ground under the car, and again it kind of had a tanish color to it, not sludgy like before, but definately looked like something else got in it....so MOST people on Yahoo think it is a cracked head, but I have heard all sorts of things like, "water pump" "thermostat" etc....basically I need to get it to a place that can get in there and identify the problem, and fix it...

There should be many good places to get your vehicle repaired other than the high priced dealership. If you don't know anyone who can recommend a good independent shop, I would suggest visiting a couple of legitimate auto parts stores in the same area (NAPA, Carquest, Federated. etc) Ask the guys at the counter for a recommendation of a couple of places that do that kind of work. If you get a couple from each, see if there is a common recommendation or two and go visit those shops and see what they look like. If they are busy and appear to be professional, I would ask for a quotation to do the work.

Any car repair shop can do it. Dealership repair shops will charge you more. Any mechanic that knows what they are doing will know what to do. If it's a head gasket, the part doesn't cost much but the labor does. My brother is a mechanic and if he were here right now he could tell you straight out what the problem was and how much to fix it. He's the only one I trust with my car.

Any good garage could repair. just look for one that is AAA approved as they will help you in the event of a post repair problem or call the better business bureau before you make a decision.
