in the booklet it says it has a 1year warrenty but do i still need the reciept

To return it to the manufacturer yes. Where did you purchase it and how? If you paid any way but cash the store can look up the receipt. They will moan and groan but can do it. Some stores will send it off for you like Wal-Mart and some will just exchange it. I hope this helps.

Yes, all general stores have such policy's in place to prevent them from thieves. "Now, don't get me wrong, but you would need a receipt. Go to the manager of the stroe to whcih you bought the ipod from, and ask them if they can help you if not go to the apple store near you or www.apple.com

maybe the manufacturer, because the serial is sometimes still accessible....
BTW if you can't do it you can sell broken IPODs on EBAY....
Its not much but if its not fixable by your own methods.... you can get something back.... I sold a water-damaged 2gb nano for about 60
