Classical Jewish texts do not specifically indicate that G-d destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because the inhabitants were homosexual. Rather, they were destroyed because the inhabitants were generally depraved and uncompromisingly greedy. Rabbinic writings affirm that the primary crimes of the Sodomites were terrible and repeated economic crimes, both against each other and outsiders.

A rabbinic tradition, described in the Mishnah, postulates that the sin of Sodom was related to property: Sodomites believed that "what is mine is mine, and what is yours is yours", which is interpreted as a lack of compassion. Another rabbinic tradition is that these two wealthy cities treated visitors in a sadistic fashion. One example is the story of the "bed" that guests to Sodom were forced to sleep in: if they were too short they were stretched to fit it, and if they were too tall, they were cut up.

The Talmud also recounts the incident of a young girl (some sources say it was a daughter of Lot) who gave some bread to a poor man who had entered the city. When the townspeople discovered her act of kindness, they smeared her body with honey and hung her from the city wall until she was stung to death by bees. It is this gruesome event and her scream, in particular, the Talmud concludes, that are alluded to in the verse that heralds the city’s destruction: "So Hashem said, ‘Because the outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah has become great, and because their sin has been very grave, I will descend and see…" (Genesis 18:20-21)

Thank you for this opportunity to educate you. Now you know the real reason G-d destroyed the cities had nothing to do with homosexuality.

Please reread the stories of "Sodom and Gomora " (sic) and ask yourself: is it about consensual gay sex? No, of course not, it's about rape: forced sex. If you are truly interested in the Bible and what it truly says about being gay, I'd recommend the book Jonathan Loved David: Homosexuality in Biblical Times by Thomas Marland Horner. It is a thorough analysis of the texts in their original languages written by a theologian. It's about 30 years old, but still good. Of course, the other answer is that many, including me, are not Christian or Jewish, so what the bible says and does not say is of no concern to me. It would be nice, though, if those who claim to follow the bible would start with "love thy neighbor".

The church loves to preach against gays, and they love to use the story of Sodom & Gommorah. However, what is conveniently overlooked is information from the Bible's book of Ezekiel about the real cause for the destruction of the cities.

Here is what the prophet Ezekiel has to say about the matter.

Ezekiel 16:49 This was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.
v:50 They were haughty, and did abominable things before me; therefore I removed them when I saw it.

It is obvious that whatever the sin of Sodom was, universal homosexuality was not it. It appears to be closely connected with pride, and not taking care of the poor!

i've always found it quite interesting, no religions agree with each other. Catholicism argues with Judaeism, Seekism, Bhudism etc and they can't agree on what God looks like, what gender/species he is, how old he is or even if he's alone (other Gods aswell) but the one thing they can all agree on is that He hates Queers...it's almost honouring that the one unifying opion of all relions 'homosexuality is wrong'...not. To answer the question Jesus turned over tables in the temple because of gambling but people still gamble.

How can people be ignorant hate-filled bigots when they see what hypocrites it makes them?

How can people spell words like "Sodom and Gomorrah" wrong in questions and pretend to be holier-than-thou?

If you check actual citations in most bibles, PRIDE was the sin that doomed those cities, not having LGBT people. So I guess having pride in preaching hatred, bigotry and discrimination against LGBT people would condemn such a hypocrite as well, wouldn't it?

Shame on you!

God Cares...... even your screen name is mistaken. If God cared then why did he wire my neurons at birth to be attracted to male pheromones, to find the male form more attractive than the female form, and then supposedly condemn me for possessing his own handiwork? Then again, how can a myth be credited with having any handiwork? As for Sodom and Gomorrah, that issue has been thoroghly addressed by several above me so I won't go into it again.

According to your way of thought, people who believes in Bible doesn't eat shellfish, women attend church with their heads covered, man and woman observes strictly the Sabbath, etc., etc., etc. Darling if you wanna be such a Bible observer you must obey everything, not only a part, a part which fits your lifestyle.

The very second I try to gang-rape someone I'm supposed to be helping, I'll repent and change my ways. Promise.

Go READ the story; "homosexuality" is not the only thing going on there, and it's not the reason God destroyed the cities.

The natives of those towns were into rape, among other activities, not just being gay (and no more of them were gay than in any town anywhere today). Funny how so many devout Christians can read hundreds of thousands of words in the Bible, but can only remember reading that it mentions homosexuality.

If it weren't for the Texans naming their anti-gay laws as "anti-sodomy laws" would anyone even remember the made-up connection between this story and homosexuality?

If you read that meaning that homosexuality is wrong, fine, be straight. As for me, I will continue to read from that story that sex is to be shared between two people in love (not rape, orgies, etc) and I will continue to not be straight.
