I've owned a Compaq for a year and a half. It's generally OK but has cut out due to overheating. I did some googling on this and it seems to be a bit of a problem with them. My work computer's a Dell and it's much better and faster (despite similar spec to my Compaq). That's the brand I'll be going for next time.

I can't tell you much about Gateways. I owned one of their desktops 10 years ago and couldn't fault it. But as you well know, 10 years is a long time in computers.

Gateway can be anagrammed to Get-A-Way. That bothers me some. I have never seen a Gateway that I liked. Compaq is a sub-unit of HP. HP's stuff is better than Compaq. <<--Opinion

Gateway has been declining in sales steadily for the past few years...there must be a reason.

Compaq is now the low end consumer line for HP. Better than Gateway but still quite average.

Choose an HP Media Center PC for true non proprietary quality components in a home PC.

Not sure about gateway, but we've bought Compaq's since the start and we've never had any problems whatsoever with them at all.

I make my own computers these days, but the last time I bought a big name computer it was a Gateway and that lasted me about four and a half years without ever needing to make any big repairs. It worked well and was clean and all I could ask for from a computer.

My last laptop was a Compaq and I hated it, ran really slow. My new one is a Gateway, AMD Turion, Dual Core 2 processor, dual dvd, multimedia and 3D gaming, I love it.

Used both in the past and never had a problem. I reckon it's just personal choice.

I once heard a story of an exploding gateway years ago but I dunno where it came from, and after the exploding dell last year, I think it's a very rare thing lol
