what do people use spread sheets for?

Just about anything you can name. Their best function is, of course, keeping data in tables. But, I have written entire systems in Excel. You can do a lot more than people think with a spreadsheet.

most book-keeping and accounting programs use spreadsheets. once it's set up you just enter the figures and the program does the calculations for you.
