To understand a dream, it’s helpful to keep in mind why and how we dream. When we sleep, the body and perception systems are shut down, but the brain remains active. The brain thinks about what has recently been most active during waking hours—experiences, thoughts and feelings accessed recently whether consciously or not. The brain is still active, so it works on this content, but not in a familiar, rational way. During sleep, this material is not related using input from the external real world, but rather by the brain connections already established in the cortex. So the story connectedness isn’t like everyday experience, but rather a strange, circuitous flow from one image to the next. So dreams aren’t magical messages to guide our life, but dream imagery is taken from everyday experiences, thoughts and feelings that matter most to us during our waking life. So it’s a mistake to apply standard symbol definitions, such as Freudian meanings or standard “dreammoods” symbols. All you need to do is think about what kind of imagery it is and how it relates to your daily life.

Of course a fistfight is an image of anger and the desire to strike back. Dreaming about this may mean that in your waking life, either consciously or unconsciously you have been thinking intensely about the fact that you've been wronged or hurt and you'd like to retaliate. But you never land a punch because this kind of aggressiveness doesn't come naturally to you...you have no ready memories or images for it. You want to strike back, but you're reluctant to do so.

Which would be a good indication. The smart money would be to "let it go." Walk away from thoughts and feelings about vengeance as soon as possible, because the stress they cause can weaken your immune system, maybe even shorten your life. It's a horrible burden and distraction, which you don't need. And the consequences of actually striking back...well, you don't want any part of that!

OK there are a lot of literal answers, and rude ones in here.
Seems like landing a punch means something you're trying to do, that's either in self-defense, or aggressive against someone.
Being aggressive can be positive, or negative. You need to look inside and interpret what that punch means- what your real desire is, and whether it's justified.
You could have a problem with a family member, and just not know how to stand up for yourself.
Or, you could be wishing you were dating someone, and you just want to knock that person they're already dating right out of the way!
So, first, figure out the symbolism.. Then, make a decision, and do your best to resolve your wrestling with it. I mean, fighting with it.
Good luck!

Most likely, it means you feel ineffectual, like there's something you can't accomplish. Are you always fighting the same person, or the same "type" of person (for example, a teacher, or police officer, or something like that) in the dream? If so, you may have pent-up anger against someone or something that that person represents.

Try thinking about the things that frutstrate you most in life and think about what you can do to change them. Then try a few, and see if your life gets better. If it doesn't work out, try something else.

Also, before bed, try a visualization exercise. Imagine yourself winning a fight, or better yet avoiding a fight altogether. If you run the same story over and over again in your head before you sleep, you may be able to change the course of the dream, which will help you feel the confidence to make other changes to improve your life.

even though we are confident we will win that fistfight, if and when it happens, there is a deep fear within that we will not[win]. It is common and it totally sucks. The slow fist that does not land that punch is that crap fear. Hate those dreams! Not sure what to do about it except maybe try to wake up QUICK!

You must correct your thoughts. Previously you believed yourself not to be able to fight very well. You can change that by visualizing yourself winning.

You suck at fighting. Seriously though, you should take up tae kwon do and learn how to fight.
