Today, Defense Secretary Robert Gates repeated a phrase I have often heard during the past four years: that the non-binding resolution against Bush's Iraq war policy 'comforts and emboldens the enemy.'

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, and all the administration insiders have been attempting to silence their critics with this phrase for years. Really, does the fact that America is an open society with Free Speech and a constitutional right to criticize our government really embolden the enemy? And if we all gave in to this statement and stopped expressing our opposition to the war, then doesn't that really send a signal to the enemy that they are winning? Really, if fear of the terrorists makes us change one of the fundamental principles of American society, then aren't they winning?

You bet they do. The enemy sees us as a house divided and that's the first step towards conquering us.

No, of course not.

What really emboldens the enemy is our invading a country that didn't threaten us (Iraq) or play a significant role in terrorism (before we invaded, that is).

What really emboldens the enemy is our continuing support of autocratic, corrupt administrations like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan which themselves overtly support Islamic terrorism.

What really emboldens the enemy is our persistent meddling in the internal affairs of other countries for economic reasons - rather than for our hypocritically stated reasons of justice, human rights, or terrorism.

What really emboldens the enemy is our persistent saber rattling and lack of diplomacy (e.g. recently towards Syria and Iran) - while they realize we are so swamped in Iraq that we are incapable of following through on our threats - not to mention that they have now seen how terribly ineffective the world's greatest military is against groups of entrenched guerillas.

What really emboldens the enemy is our continued insanely biased support of Israel in the face of their violation of dozens of U.N. resolutions calling for them to halt hostilities against their neighbors and to return to 1967 borders.

It emboldens the enemy to see the America politicians divided against the war. It's disgusting and puts the people actually fighting the war in more danger than they already are.
