The problem is, teachers are needed because schooling is required by law. Nobody wants to teach because all the good ones can make massive amounts of money in other fields. Hence the American education system rates where it does in the world. It just leaves those that can't get a better job to teach. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good educators, but for the most part I think the bottom of the barrel is being scraped for the rest. Any career field that requires a degree but pays you below the poverty level is wrong. Teachers have a massive influence on children, afterall, they spend more time with the kids than most parents. So I would say yes, anyone who can read and do math probably had their life changed for the better by a teacher.

I had teachers that have had an impact on my life and have helped me become the person I am today. However I've had teachers, professors, that I can't even remember. That is the difference, weather they were good or bad, you remember them. They had some kind of effect on you. Now should they get paid more than everyone else? Well If they are worth it, they should get paid what they deserve. Some more than others. I do think teachers are under paid,at least were I live. I don't think money would make them work harder though. They either got it or they don't. You can tell when a teacher loves their job or not, or has lost interest in teaching.

They might not deserve to make more money than everyone else. But they certainly deserve more money than they are making now.
Teachers are by far the most underpaid professionals, and yet you sit there and expect them to run around changing peoples lives for the better.
For that matter, yes, I have had a few teachers that did have a lasting effect on my life - though most of them were getting paid better because of the college I went to (you get what you pay for).
Public school teachers get the worst deal, low pay, dealing with increasingly stupid and badly behaving children (the product of video games and TV), whiny parents (my little johnny never misbehaves), etc.
If you can read this post, thank a teacher.

I don't think it's common to say "they deserve to make more money than EVERYONE else" but it is common to say they deserve more money.
It's a tough job and many teachers still rise to the occasion, going above and beyond what I feel the average worker would, to do everything they can to genuinely make a difference in kids' lives.
If it wasn't for some of my teachers I would have turned out to be a much more abused/traumatized person. Instead I had role models, good reasons to focus in class, and a vision for my future. It sounds hokey, but I mean it. :)
All that for $24,000/year! (at the time)

Good teachers should make more money. I didn't have very many good ones, though. If teachers were paid an appropriate professional salary then we wouldn't have to put up with the bad ones because they can't be replaced. Also, I think teachers generally make less money because most of them are women. That isn't fair, and it doesn't encourage others to take up this profession. And no, I never had one of those amazing life changing teachers. (not at school anyway!)

i agree with u...
when people go into teaching, it should first come from the heart -- a good teacher will teach the kids without bringing hate towards them and others and the kids will learn AND love the teacher...the joy of helping kids who don't have a direction, or bringing something or some kind of future hope or realization to a kid that they are good at something or that they can be something etc is plenty!!!
besides the above, there are many crappy teachers out there too...
with a good teacher, they can basically adopt kids into their lives as their children which some of mine have done for me and others
with a good teacher, they will also be more likely to recieve thank yous and cards and gifts from their students
however!!!
teachers should make good money
HOWEVER
they get summers off and a lot of them only have to teach a few hours a day
anyone who goes into teaching should already know that they aren't going in for the money
if teachers got payed a bunch...can u imagine how many people would go into teaching for the wrong reasons and seriously make terrible impacts on kids!?
i have had good teachers and bad teachers -- bad ones which scarred me for years and good ones which have brought me up
to all my good teachers out there...i would really like to thank you all!!! so mux!!!
xao:)

Yes, teachers have made a difference in my life. They deserve better pay. It is not true that those that can do and those that can't teach. I could and did work in a profession other than teaching, but I felt a call to go to the classroom to share the enthusiasm for learning and knowledge that my teachers shared with me.

I'm all for pay for performance. If a teacher is churning out a bunch of illiterate drools, then they are wasting my tax dollars. If they are building the next generation of doctors and engineers, they should get a bonus. If they produce a lawyer or U.N bureaucrat, they should be sent to the salt mines.
We should track their former students and base their pay on the average earnings and contributions to society.
Actually, there are teachers who have positive inpacts on their students, but sadly they are few and far between.

Must be, I believe that if teachers were paid better or their job more appreciated then the world would be a better place, after all they are the major influence on children.
