I just bought an external dvd burner and it came with Nero software. I have some movies on my comp in the .AVI format that I want to burn onto DVD for use on a home DVD player. I burned one already and it worked fine but it took about 2 hours and also it was "transcoding?" the file but that seems to be a limited trial with the software. So, is there a quicker way to burn and also is there a free transcoder program (or whatever I need) out there?

No, depending on your PC's CPU & RAM that sounds acceptable.
Tasks such as these are the most CPU intensive of all.

I use a dual core unit with 2Gb of RAM & although the actual burning of the DVD takes about 4 minutes the transcoding may often take an hour (depending on the source file).

The program has little to do with it.
Nero is about as good as it gets.
